The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The idea of President Biden doesn't really appeal to me either. For me, It'd be a vote against Trump in the General, and not a vote for Biden.

I feel like we've had the Biden discussion a dozen times already. It seems like everyone's position on him is already known.

My roommate just said that "republicans don't hate LGBTQ people".

Does anyone have any sources that agree or disagree?

Well, you can't speak for every Republican, but if they don't, they have a funny way of showing it.

You could always point to Pence. Or Trump banning Transgender people in the military. Or Trump's support of Tony Perkins and vice versa. Or...

There are obviously going to be individual Republicans that don't. Their movement and policies on the other hand, really aren't open for much interpretation on the matter.

The biggest benefit to Biden is that of all possible democrat candidates he has the biggest possible appeal to non-base voters and a lot of political gravitas.

Ideologically, he's a bad candidate, but practically...

I feel like we've had the Biden discussion a dozen times already. It seems like everyone's position on him is already known.

I guess it got brought up again because the news that he's almost certainly going to run and the fact that his polling makes him a strong contender has made it a lot more real for us.

It's like what happened when Sanders announced his run.

Frankly I'm mostly looking at the growing list and growing ever more exhausted. The actual elections are like two years away. These increasingly long primary cycles are a drain.

If I had my do anything wishlist, it would be to put actual time limits on how soon people can announce and how long these things can go on. Because holy shit did I not look forward to a Democratic version of the last two election cycle's shit circus.

[up][up]I'm thinking I'll only check up on the primaries' progress every week or so. Checking on the campaigns every minute of every day is too exhausting.

[up]...Okay it's time to find a new roommate if possible.

he has the biggest possible appeal to non-base voters

I'd say him having the biggest possible appeal to non-base voters probably doesn't weigh up well to how much it will alienate the new progressive additions to the Democrat base after the mid-terms if the DNC supports him far more than more progressive candidates. The DNC's blatant favouritism of Hillary over Bernie during the primaries leading up to 2016 did the Democrats no favours (even if it's understandable given that Bernie was an independent up to and after that).

My opinion on Biden is that he's not the best candidate by far but he'd easily defeat Trump and is still on the progressive side of things. So I'm resigned to him having a decent chance of winning the primaries before thrashing Trump.

Even if I support Warren and Bernie above him.

Harris I'm back and forth on.

538 noticed that the second choice for a lot of Sanders supporters is Biden and vice versa. So while they both have a large lead over the other candidates, right now its mostly because of name recognition, since its certainly not their positions.

Well, LGBTQ people certainly mostly don't like the Republicans.

I'd point to all the examples of Republican hostility towards LGBTQ rights, but honestly I'd just google it if I were you. There's certainly no shortage of examples.

It's a five year old study that only says what the republican party thinks. Which is about as uselessly subjective as you can get for the "we're friendly" side.

The only reason Bernie came close to upsetting Hillary was his positions.

Anyway, it won't be just the voters who decide the Primary candidate. A lot of it will be carried by the DNC itself.

So Bernie will probably lose to Biden or Warren.

Biden will get massacred if he runs against Trump. The only part of the Democratic base he appeals to is old party loyalists, and the "center" will see two old white guys with roaming hands and a tendency to put their feet in their mouths
