Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'd rather have no billionaires. Whether it's a benevolent liege lord or not, they're still a de facto liege lord, choosing how much money goes where.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."
It's very hard (and probably not desirable honestly) to have a society where some people don't have more than others. The more realistic goal would be some sort of basic income, at least for people making under a certain amount, and bringing back the higher tax income tax rates for people over a certin income bracket to fund it.
I do respect John D. Rockefeller Jr. I know that his father, Rockefeller Senior, made his massive empire through cutthroat business tactics, but the immeasurable amount of good that Rockefeller Jr. did with his inheritance, is undeniable.
He helped fund the restoration of Versailles, Colonial Williamsburg, and many other historical buildings around the world, played an instrumental role in the Creation of Acadia and Grand Teton National Parks (and several others), helped found the Brookings Institute, donated the land the UN Building is built on in Manhattan, and had a huge impact in the art and educational world, just to mention a few of the things he helped support.

This video seems like a rebuttal to this very specific argument.
I'm fine with some having more wealth than others, so long as everyone gets shelter, food, healthcare, education, and, above all, respect, safety, and dignity. I'm not fine with the personally wealthiest getting to decide where the polity's resources should go. There's a difference between living in opulence oneself, and controlling others' lives. The decisions of such minorities tend to be self-serving, in rather short-sighted ways.

To the best of my knowledge any crimes they commited would have been federal, Trump has likely commited a high number of state crimes, that opens him up to a state AG with a grudge (of which there are a good number in this partisan an era) coming after him.

What’s really needed is government intervention, all the personal charity in the word is nothing compared to what the US government could do.
I suspect that it might actully be more cost effective to fund political groups that campaign for government intervention on issues than to try and the fix the issues with ones own money.
Imagine if the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation was commited to spending its money getting politicians elected who’d put government money into fighting diseases in Africa, rather than trying to fight said diseases with the relatively small amount of money the foundation has.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranAnother sign that ICE needs to have its entire staff fired even if you don't want to dissolve the organization completely. In this case, they grabbed an American citizen with his passport and ID as a veteran before trying to deport him. They denied he had any of this information on him but well...they'd entered it all as evidence.
Yeah.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. This is why I say burn it all down. This right here. Oh, and other breaking news, ICE refused to help a woman in labor in a detention facility, and her baby died.

A quick Google suggests that the AAF is a conservative think tank that's tried in the past to shut down the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and runs a Super PAC to establish Republican Congressional majorities. I'm not the person to ask about economics, but that sounds like a not exactly unbiased source to me.
It's been fun.Nvm.

Given the way by which the Russian oligarchy has collected its power and the way they use it, I’m not sure that’s a fully accurate comparison. The ultra-rich in the US are far from spotless but it’s a very different situation in Russia.
They should have sent a poet.
