Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, Coulter has been pissed at Trump for a while.
Because he's moderated himself too much to the GOP mainstream, Coulter wants him to become more extreme in his reactionary authoritarianism not less.
She just dislikes that he's all show and no substance.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangAnne Coulter is still a favorite pin up girl praised by many Neo-Nazis. I am disturbed to know that.
I read one of her books out of curiosity as well.
The book contained (in no particular order):
- A statement the United States going to war for oil was reasonable
- A passionate defense of Joseph Mc Carthy
- A statement that Muslims were dangerous and almost all terrorists were
- Immigration was a source of welfare drains, criminals, and uncontrollable breeding
- White people were a persecuted minority
- Not just Christianity was threatened but "productive" Christianity that I assume she meant that Catholics and Blacks were off her list.
She'd be terrifying if she had any power.

Where do we go from here?
I don't know about the rest of you, but I called my congressman (John Katko - find yours here
) and requested that he support impeaching Trump.
Because this kind of shit? That might benefit the GOP in the short-term, but they really need to consider the long-term effects of this overreach. What happens if Ocasio-Cortez becomes President and declares a National Emergency to resolve Climate Change, as that poses an "existential threat" and Congress isn't budging on it? Because that's the exact scenario the GOP is setting up if they don't rein in Trump on this shit.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"
At least some in the GOP won’t care because they probably have the (not unjustified) belief that the Democrats would not go through with such extreme actions, especially after they spent all of this time condemning those actions by Republicans.
In essence they feel that the Democrats will be to scared of being called “hypocites” that they think this decision won’t come back to bite them.

Bad example. Seeing as solving climate change is something we'd actually want.
x7 Pelosi and Schumer are already pledging to oppose it along with Senators on both sides of the fence and a number of AG's. This is going to get tangled up in Congress, lawsuits, you name it. This is far from over.

Rightfully so, of course. They're so used to the low road and the Dems keep being crippled by a combination of that and being much less of a unified bloc the GOP knows they can largely act with impunity.
In essence they feel that the Democrats will be to scared of being called “hypocites” that they think this decision won’t come back to bite them.
Uh no, the assumption that Democrats won't go through with it is completely unjustified.
Democrats have strongly opposed the Republicans and Pelosi has literally said that if the Republicans create this precedent Democratic Presidents will use it, they'd be morons to assume that Democrats won't reciprocate.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangSpeaking of hypocrisy:
Trump once called executive action on immigration dangerous, unconstitutional and impeachable – President Donald Trump once said taking executive action on immigration was an unconstitutional action that could lead to impeachment.

Is there still a Twitter or something keeping track of these "This is what I say but this is what I do" moments?
For the heck of it, on a related note:
Mitch Mc Connell’s dark secret: he used to support campaign finance reform – Mc Connell called money in politics a "cancer" in a 1973 op-ed. Then he ran for Senate.

@Fourth Spartan: She says that now, but if/when the time comes to follow through on that threat I am not so certain that a hypothetical Democratic President would do so and/or would have the backing of enough of the Democratic Party.
I feel confident Pelosi understands the party politics far better than either of us and thus I highly doubt that she would make such a threat if it couldn't be backed up.
Well said.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThe Evil Turtle is an amoral, unpincipled, standard-free stereotype politician. I am sure that if Kentucky were to become a blue state tomorrow he'd change his party affiliation so fast you'd never notice that he was a Republican before. I am also 100% sure that he'll line up behind Trump on the national emergency declaration until Democrats plot to do the same thing and then cry about a "power grab".
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWell yeah, but that's stupid.
Creating precedent and then crying when people make use of that is not the actions of a smart person, I have no doubt he's amoral or self-interested but I'm not really in awe of his strategy or foresight.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangWell, he has announced his support for Trump's action. I suspect that he's afraid of losing his re-election bid if he doesn't and that he's not really happy with the precedent set, although that's just my speculation. Never mind that all his procedural tricks won't help when the House sends a motion of disapproval on its way, it's a privileged motion and he can't say "I am not going to schedule a vote on this".
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIn Real Life, sociopaths are pretty terrible at long-term planning and risk-menagement.

Honestly I think Ann Coulter is saying that because she doesn’t believe he will actually do anything. That or she was looking for another government shutdown.
I.E. it’s not because even she thought it was to extreme, she just doesn’t think he is going far enough.
