The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There is some scientific evidence for the idea of whole blood transfusions as a longevity treatment, although there have been no studies in human subjects that I know of. The ethics of something like that are kind of wack, obviously. But if you have enough money and only give a shit about yourself...

[up][up][up][up] Historically, you get super high inflation when production collapses, not when you print money. The French army marches in and occupies your coal mines, so all industry grinds to a halt. The government tries to keep buying stuff by printing money, but it cannot mobilize any production, because, well, the French army is still sitting on the coal mines, so all it does is drive the nominal prices of the remaining productive economy through the roof.

Lesson here is not "Money printing is the problem" it is "Do not get your key industrial infrastructure occupied by the French".

Except society is not a zero sum game. In a prospering society, everybody benefits, but the affluent* benefit the most. That's very much true today compared to the 1950s; things were more equal back then thanks to a massive amount of wealth going up in literal flames due to the revolutions, wars, and pandemics of the early 20th century, but quality of life has improved globally. The alternative is virtually everyone suffering equally under delusional, unworkable Utopian projects to revise the fundamental workings of human society.

It might as well be a zero sum game when you say it's fine if policies fuck over the poor and increase wealth inequality if it prevents climate change.

Case in point was that the example in question was literally dumping pollutants on poor and minority groups.

[up] No, but most developed countries have a top heavy demographic pyramid, and the dependency ratio that results in is a significant drag on particularly old countries like Japan. Medical interventions targeting aging would improve late life health across the board, but since people don't die of old age persay (they die of the ill health associated with old age), longer and eventually indefinite lifespans would be a direct consequence of that.

[up][up] Compared to the baseline of 4+ degrees warming, the poor are still better off in that scenario by virtue of not starving to death, and regardless of whether they're government run or not, any program that effectively combats climate change is likely going to increase wealth gaps. In fact the "left wing" policies will probably have a more significant impact on quality of life gaps, in the sense that they'd make cars and meat luxuries only the wealthy could afford.

[up][up] Your body decays at a rate determined significantly by genetic factors regardless of your lifestyle. You can certainly make things worse by your choices, but even if you make all the best choices, you're still limited by your genetic clock. Increased natural longevity has been a human dream since almost as long as human culture has existed, and while we've found lots of ways to prevent and treat disease, we keep running into this pre-programmed self-destruct button built into our biology.

It's hardly strange to think that scientists would be researching ways of overcoming those natural limitations, or that people with a lot of money and power might seek unethical methods of living longer. Indeed, whole blood transfusions have been an idea in science fiction long before they had any support in medical science — for one example, see Methuselah's Children, by Robert A. Heinlein. (In that story, they use cloned blood, not "donated" blood — and later, they use cloned tissue transplants to essentially replace your body parts as they wear out.)

[up][up][up] There's some factual errors with what you're saying there. The big one is that there's very little evidence these days that aging is a genetically programmed process in mammals, and that's besides the point since biological systems are vastly more complicated than just the genome, which is a problem I notice people with computer science backgrounds tend to make a lot when they try to talk about biology.

People don't die at 80 or even 120 because of some genetically (or otherwise) programmed "self destruct" switch, they die for the same* reason a car generally stops working if it goes without maintenance for an extended period of time.

* Well, sort of. Mechanical wear and tear is only an issue with post-mitotic tissues and sometimes only on timescales far longer than the human lifespan. One estimate is that we’re it not for the whole support system around them collapsing, neurons could last 400+ years before random attrition significantly impaired brain function. Now, that’s a rather back of the envelope educated guess at best, but most of the neurons in the brain are still intact at the time of death for elderly people not suffering from a neurodegenerative disorder.
