Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump's shilling for North Korea again. Thinks the country is an economic powerhouse of some sort.
Still sure he lives in our reality?
"Yup. That tasted purple."...there no sarcastic remark worthy of mocking this...
As a friend of mine used to say: "the best jokes write themselves".

Heard about that, not a fan of his support for Charter schools.
He definitely isn't my 1st, 2nd, or 3rd choice.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangBecause advocacy for them is universally connected to giving affluent families an excuse to abandon public schools and thus directly encouraging education inequality.
If I wanted a President who'd support that I'd vote De Vos 2020.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangApparently Donald says the dems can't ''legitimately'' win in 2020.
Sure smells like projection in here....
Thanks for taking the time to inform me, though.
My pleasure
Charter schools like many pro-market reforms don't sound bad hypothetically but in actuality have terrible effects. It's understandable that you wouldn't know the specifics.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI'm going, to be honest, there just isn't enough time in the world to justify worrying about something like this.
If Trump refuses to concede (keep in mind that he's a giant coward so this is in no way guaranteed) then he'll just be escorted out by the secret service.
Boom done.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangFair, that's an actually reasonable thing to be concerned about.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangSpeaking of charter schools, here’s an article about the effect charter schools had on Michigan.
Spoilers: very, VERY bad effects. Oh, and the origin of private schools is super racist.
Charter schools aren’t technically private schools, but the concept of pulling kids from public schools is similar in effect. Many of the most successful charter schools essentially limit their admissions to high performing students
(who would have also excelled had they remained in public schools), which skews the data when they claim good results.
Indiana is trying to expand charter schools, and I’m furious both as a person and as a former public high school teacher. Additional side note: funding our public schools through property taxes is racist and classist and wrong.
I actually supported privatizing education in my early 20s. Before I read up on the realities of private ed, and charter schools. Before I became a teacher. I really goddamn hope Booker isn’t the nominee, because I think his support for charter schools is reprehensible.
I couldn't agree more, it's a completely irrational allocation of resources. Giving the most affluent people the best schools just mean that the people who need the least help will get the most.
It's completely unacceptable and should be opposed as much as possible.
Well said!

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangIt's kind of weird, I was opposed to Booker before but talking about his position on Charter schools has made me oppose him much more.
I knew all of this intellectually and yet spending the time to properly examine it gave me more motivation to be opposed to him.
It's fascinating.

It's not just that, it's that they think those ideas are fundamentally ridiculous and will either alienate the general voterbase beyond the dem's hardcore base, or they fail on their own merit because they're bad.
