Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, well, that's what we get. However, this undelscores my point; imagine if Rowling used her money and influence to push against trans rights. Even the 'nice' billionnaires, acting in good faith, can be dead wrong about some things, and have way too much power to act on their wrong beliefs.
Thankfully, unlike personal flaws, transphobia is an opinion that can be changed. I know mine has, dramatically. So could hers.

It sounds like you're pushing for people not being allowed to be billionaires because you don't trust people in general.
And transphobia is not just an opinion. It's a personal flaw. Bigotry is a personal flaw. That it's not something necessarily set in stone doesn't change this.

Disgusted, but not surprisedYeah Rowling has donated the maximum she can to the UK Labour Party and continues to be a member even though she disagrees with Corbyn.
Rowling does however have a confusing and bad track record on social issues. She’s transphobic, has little to no understanding of non-British countries and tends to get in fights with trolls on Twitter.
But that all gets complicated by the fact that some accusations against her were made up (she didn’t make Dumbledore gay after the fact for brownie points, it was just never explicitly stated outside of notes to the actors until she mentioned it publicly), other times there’s cultural confusion between British and American culture and finally that twitter (her main method of communication with people) is a terrible method of communicating and having a conversation.
Also she’s annoyed a number of fans separately with her rather haphazard wordbuilding after finishing the books.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIt's all about some irrational, misanthropic mistrust, it's about empirical observation and a basic understanding of power dynamics, incentive systems, and the predictable limitations of human hearts and minds. Why 'trust' when you can have guarantees and accountability?
The Word of Gay is entirely forgivable, but there's no excuse for keeping any inkling of romance between Dummy and Grindy in the film. Heck, instead of Dummy being unable to face Grindy because he's in love with him, it's because of some stupid magical blood pact or some bullshit. That's just petty, cowardly, exploitative, and insulting.

Well, sine the Southern Strategy, Conservatism married Racism and Black people who are sane and smart tend to get selected out.
Well, you know what they say, thank God for Mississippi.
Also, M84, I have trouble conceptualizing things as a 'personal flaw' when they go away after having things explained to one or looking up facts. No amount of explaining or research can stop greed, violent anger, cruelty, avarice, narcissism, or sociopathy. There's a difference between being 'wrong' and being 'bad'.

So her post-book retcons now include homosexual erasure? Goddamit.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranMind you I think that may be trying to avoid Dumbledore having Unfortunate Implications of being unable to stop Wizard Hitler. But yes, we need much more overt showing of their love if we're to give her any traction on her Word of Gay for Dumbledore.

Fair enough.

The Green Party has their own green new deal proposal which bans nuclear, and apparently the trolls and right wingers spread around stuff from their proposal and claimed it was from AOC’s.
I feel like a bit of an ass for not checking what the bill said about nuclear myself. Lesson learned.
You're completely right, the proposal itself doesn't mention an intention to move away from nuclear energy.
Rather I got it from a state that AOC's office gave to NPR
.
I'm sorry for lumping that in with the overall Green New Deal without clarifying, I mistakenly conflated their statements with the content of the bill.
It's not irrelevant but the fact it's not in the Green New Deal itself is still important, sorry for accidentally misleading everyone.
