Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Tone-deaf is an occasional accident.
What Sanders has is a pattern of behavior.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Well, "tone deafness" is a pattern as well. And more innocently, if Sanders will give his own SOTU response mentioning it along with Abrams's one is a rational Twitter writing way (notice how Xavier Becerra
isn't even mentioning Abrams)
It makes sense pragmatically if he's giving his own response. But the fact that he's giving his own response is the issue.
The party's chosen who they want to give the speeches. Now, Bernie's an Independent whenever it suits him, so he doesn't have to abide by that. But that, in and of itself, is another demonstration of how he has no actual intention or desire to be part of the party whose nomination for Presidency he covets.
He's basically pulling a Kanye here. "Yo, Abrams, I'm real happy for you and Imma let you finish, but the SOTU response I'm putting together is one of the best speeches of all time! Of all time."
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Sanders has previously responded to Trump's speeches
and if my understanding is correct only the official - Abrams's - reply will be in TV and almost certainly also on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. So I am not entirely convinced by the "hogging the spotlight" thesis.
An established historic pattern of spotlight-hogging does not make him less of a spotlight-hog.

Idaho Supreme Court upholds Medicaid expansion
https://www.idahostatesman.com/news/politics-government/state-politics/article225578040.html
The court ruled against the Idaho Freedom Foundation in its lawsuit, which argued that Prop 2 to expand Medicaid was written in a way that gave too much power to the federal government and one state agency.
Medicaid expansion will make Idaho’s working poor — those in the “Medicaid gap” — eligible for public health insurance in 2020.
The ruling came just one week after the court heard arguments from both sides: the Idaho Freedom Foundation and the Idaho Secretary of State. The court also heard from a lawyer representing Idaho physicians and two Idaho women who would qualify for expanded Medicaid.
About 61 percent of Idaho voters approved the law. It allows people who make less than 138 percent of poverty-level income to qualify for Medicaid coverage, even if they don’t have children or a disability.
The Idaho Attorney General’s Office had argued that the lawsuit — brought by IFF board chairman Brent Regan — lacked merit and was “frivolous, unreasonable and without foundation on several levels.”
The lawsuit isn’t the only challenge Medicaid expansion is facing in Idaho.
After being sworn in, Gov. Brad Little vowed to uphold the will of the voters and to support the expansion of Medicaid. But he and state legislators have discussed possible restrictions, such as work requirements. Lawmakers also must decide how to fund the expansion. Idaho would pay 10 percent of the cost, and federal funding would cover the remaining 90 percent — a much larger share than the federal government has covered for traditional Medicaid in Idaho.
The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare expects to submit its plan for expansion to federal officials by Feb. 18.
Chuck Schumer didn't even bother waiting
for Trump's SOTU, and it's 24 hour at best call for unity, to blast it
It seems every year the president wakes up and discovers the desire for unity on the morning of the State of the Union. Then the president spends the other 364 days of the year dividing us and sowing a state of disunion.
I really love Zerlina Maxwell's take on this
:
Sanders and his fans can take that, put in their pipes, and smoke on it.
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."@scifislasher: That is probably some of the worst degree of looking for anything to bash Sanders I've seen here.
The man has done his own separate SOTU response every single year since Trump was elected and I saw them all. Can I not enjoy seeing what he has to say about policies now? Do I need to be satisfied with the predictable democratic response?
Life is unfair...By the way, NPR will be Fact Checking
Trump as the SOTU goes on.
"Sanders and his fans can take that, put in their pipes, and smoke on it."
[in my best David Tennant voice] Hm. *puff puff* Not bad at all. Smells like teenage spirit!
As for Schmuer, that's so courageous of him, pulling a Joseph Joestar like that. If Trump ends up doing something different... One thing Schmuer misses, for instance, is that Trump kept or did his damnedest to keep the promises that Hus base cares about: hurting POC, making liberals mad, and fucking up the environment for dying industries.
Cataloguing all the enormous lies out of his mouth feels like cleaning vomit a night club's bathroom floor. I see why it needs to be done, but the gesture feels so futile.

I'm late to the filibuster conversation, but keep in mind - the filibuster is the only reason Trump's fucking wall hasn't gotten its funding. Even McConnell isn't quite so Stupid Evil as to think removing the filibuster in order to get it is worth the price.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"

For comparison this is what Kirsten Gillibrand has said:
Sanders decision is inexcusable.
