Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Pod Save America just became the podcast of Howard Schultz.
Some of the replies are hilarious, though, including one that's just "Starting to think pod won't save America."
"If you spend all your heart / On something that has died / You are not alive and that can't be a life"@Marq: I found out about Colbert just last year, and I gotta say, as a Catholic the man is my fucking idol! (Besides, y'know the other one) I really recommend looking at his stuff, there's a lot of clips of the guy on Youtube.

Not just "a lot of clips", The Late Show's Youtube channel uploads everything you're likely to want
I would say that I'm confused how somebody could not have seen Colbert before, but then I remember this xkcd
; so congrats, you're one of today's lucky 10000.
This is probably the buggiest thread in the OTC, it’s largly Americans but we have most of OTC’s Brits, Germans and South American’s at least reading this thread, plus the handful of more uniquely located tropers.
I’ll second the recommendations to follow Colbert’s You Tube, the late night comedian circuit is good stuff and it’s pretty much all on You Tube pretty quickly.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran@Silasw: Plus, the United States is currently one of the messiest countries when it comes to politics, which makes the debate subjects much more interesting, there is no such high-caliber drama like this here in Portugal.
Life is unfair...Plus Canadians. You know, in case we get invaded by Trump.
Seth Meyers is also another pick. I've gotten into the habit of watching the monologues every morning since last year.
I tend to use "This one" or "That one" for unisex pronouns, for the sake of proper syntax. "Them" is used for more than one person.
ASAB: All Sponsors Are Bad.Singular they is a perfectly acceptable use of the word, going back centuries. Furthermore, English is a descriptive language, so if everyone else is quite happy with singular they then it becomes a correct usage.
If you want information about Us politics, John Oliver and Rachel Maddows are the best, because they always explain the larger connections and aren't always chasing the latest news but often the more hidden problems. If you want to get your head straight over the core of the latest news, I recommend Seth Meyer and Trevor Noah.
Colbert is funny, but I feel that he rarely gets to a deeper truth like the other two do.

@Marq You should also watch Trevor Noah and John Oliver. They're both pretty damn good.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.
