Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Moreover, after his bullshit non-apology, now Northam is denying that that was him. He's denying that his nickname was "Coonman," when every other source says that it was. Fuck this guy, and let him be an example.
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."His stunning lack of awareness makes me wonder how he's had a political career long enough to reach a position of power, maybe he just lucky and now with the photo it;'s finally run out.Either way after this he won't have much of a career left after this
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverJust for the record, here’s what Justin Fairfax said.
They are an example of a painful scourge that continues to haunt us today and holds us back from the progress we need to make.
As we commemorate 400 years since the first enslaved Africans were brought to Virginia, it is painful to experience such a searing reminder of the modern legacy of our nation's original sin. And, as someone whose great-great-great grandfather was enslaved in Virginia, this episode strikes particularly close to home.
The Governor needed to apologize, and I am glad that he did so. He also reached out to me personally to express his sincere regrets and to apologize.
I have worked closely with Ralph Northam over many years. He has been a friend to me and has treated my family and me with hospitality and respect.
While his career has been marked by service to children, soldiers, and constituents, I cannot condone the actions from his past that, at the very least, suggest a comfort with Virginia's darker history of white supremacy, racial stereotyping, and intimidation.
At this critical and defining moment in the history of Virginia and this nation, we need leaders with the ability to unite and help us rise to the better angels of our nature.
I remain committed to serving and helping to heal the Commonwealth moving forward. Now more than ever, we must make decisions in the best interests of the people of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
I don’t think it’s even possible to be more tactful than this, given the situation.
Someone asked if there were any 80s movies with blackface, and lo and behold, there is one. Soul Man
, about a white guy who fakes being black to get an African-American only college scholarship. It was a box office success, too.
In the (small) defence of the movie: It actually has a pretty thoughtful scene towards the end when after the liars reveal the protagonist is asked if he now understands the plight of Afro-Americans and finally says that no, he doesn't, because he could have stopped taking the pills (he takes tanning pill to look black - yes, really) whenever he wanted, but an actual African-American has no choice.
I think it was well meant in a way but I think if they wanted to make a movie like this, it might have been a good idea to actually talk to African Americans and ask how they feel about it (and let it be if they said that there is no way to make it anything but offensive) and involved them in the writing process.

I see. The fact that it was financially successful, if certainly controversial and critically panned, would seem to suggest a populace who was willing to accept this sort of thing, though I don't know if that's necessarily indicative of a larger trend in media.
...Though come to think of it, I do recall hearing that The A-Team did use blackface on at least one occasion, I don't know how often, and that was made in the 80's. So maybe we are underestimating how acceptable it might have been?
Does anyone else know of anymore examples?

Oh God! Natural light!
I couldn't swear by it, but I think it turned up in McGyver, as well. It's been ages, though. M*A*S*H had yellowface in various guises and played in various ways, too. It turned up. <shrugs>
Why is it hard to cough up a full list of instances? Well, I never bothered with Soul Man at the time, so forgot it even existed. Until reminded of it, just now. Just as I've probably forgotten all the specific times it popped up in various TV shows, but recall the general "it cropped up" (including in kids animation — I'm looking at you, Orko).
Just realised a big one: Quantum Leap. I loved that show, but forgot it actually started in '89. I associate it more with the early '90s. Not blackface, as such... But think about the entire premise. And, try putting forward "white dude jumps around in time into a lot of people's lives and fixes them up before moving off — many of them being women of colour; they live with the consequences and memory blanks, but it's OK because Al and Ziggy say it is" as a goer of a pitch these days. Oh, boy.

Pelosi is saying he needs to go too
when it comes from someone who is practically the leader of democratic party he'll have to pay attention now
Looking at trump speech and how he is entitled to a great story make me think that, have we anything like republican, we will acused trump or being a whinny crybaby and a "cuck" for expecting shit for other people, specially for the same he insult.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"
A whole lot of nothing. I could put it here if you want me too, but it will most likely give you a headache. Here's the full interview transcript though.
(Try on a incognito tab)
....So, Maggie, here’s the bottom line: I love doing it. I don’t know if i should love doing it, but I love doing it.

@Colbert video:
I need to watch more of this guy's show! I already know of him, but this is the first time I remember actually watching him. Not one minute in, and I utterly love his sarcastic quips!
The fact that he's making fun of Trump is only icing on the cake.

Nah. Any such effort coming from a Republican would no doubt be in bad faith and hypocritical. If anything like that is going to happen, it needs to come from within the Democratic Party itself.
i'm tired, my friend
