Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Covering both bases in case more evidence emerges that somehow makes him look innocent I suspect, denial is a strange and desperate thing
I'm surprised he hasn't tried to claim he was the photographer rather then the subject

have a listen and have a link to my discord serverAbout blackface in subversive melodrama reviews of the '80s: I've got Kodac pictures of it. South Africa, but stuff like that happened — along with horrible costume punk (using talc to try for a grimy look).
So, yeah. That was supposedly progressive humour of the time (because trying to get black guys on stages where no blacks were supposed to be to try taking the Mickey out of PW Botha's government in cringeworthy and dangerous ways... happened). And... it was regretful in so many, many ways. (Including, you know, actual disappearances — but, also with the "jokes".)
Not very progressive humour along these lines happened, as well.
For crying out loud: how much of Eddy Murphy's career has been built on riffing on the blackface-whiteface humour of the late 70s and 80s? And these days, he's a ball of cringe. He was always a ball of cringe, but it's taken time to realise that.

I think the point being made is that "I was there" is not proof that it was mainstream when popular culture didn't use it nearly as much as you're implying.
Nobody is doubting it happened, in reference to
, just not nearly as much as seems to be being suggested.

Okay, but the USA of the 80s was not the same as Apartheid South Africa.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerI can understand making an argument that there's a difference between something not being mainstream, and it not garnering the same kind of backlash it is now.
That's the point I was trying to make - sure blackface wasn't mainstream, I still have no real trouble believing someone could find that funny then, but cringe now.
But the argument specifically "it was the 80s" is weak here.
American comedies suffered far less from the censors than British ones did when it came to hiring them for your Betamax.
Heck, we couldn't watch British comedies for years, especially BBC ones (even The Goodies needed to be smuggled). Let alone Doctor Who — it was chopped-up documentaries, basically. But, university frat hijinks, summer camp romps, vacations of "hilarity" and building women in basements? Totally cool and unsnipped.
Don't kid yourselves.

Changing the subject
Ocasio-Cortez raised like $100,000
for the primary she's challenging
Let's hope all the funding she receives in not in vein,I'd hate to see her raise all that money only to lose
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverLegwarmer phase? What??? Sorry, but you're not really explaining yourself very well.
And in any case, I don't know that I'd base what was considered acceptable in the USA based solely on what movies a highly biased government organization was letting into your country at the time. Which seems to be what you're doing.
Granted, I don't think this would have created a lot of backlash if it had come to light back when it happened; it would have gotten more of a "boys will be boys" kind of reaction from white people, probably, while generating a lot of outrage in the black populace. Because it was the eighties, and "boys will be boys" has only very recently been called out as a shitty excuse for bad behavior.
The legwarmer phase was kicked off ('cuse pun) by films like Flashdance, Fame (also TV Series), the new fad called "music videos" and the rise of the keep-fit industry. But, it also relied on community facilities (including theatres and sports centres) that... Well...
Began to die in earnest in the mid-80s. Because the rise of private gyms, better cable, the interwebs and the drying up of funding for things like community theatre because Reagan.
There's whole increasingly being lost layer to your culture you guys don't seem too aware about. That's both great and, maybe, a bit sad. Great... Because a lot of the humour in community melodrama is best left dead and buried, even though its footprints can be readily seen in the tropes used in '80s films (if you had to suffer the stuff neat, you can spot it). :/

Anwyay getting back on topic
So I read a comment that suggested that a guy named Joe Crowley could win the primary against her thanks to their political background being extensive and they seem to think he'd make a good primary candidate for the same reasons
