Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I find this story of deported Americans most depressing.
https://story.californiasunday.com/deported-americans
Seems like Governor Ralph Northam (D-VA) is in trouble
. He apparently had racist imagery including of a KKK costume in his yearbook.
Saying something innapropriately racist and wearing goddamn Klan robes are two very different things. He wasn't even a minor anymore, he for sure knew the disgusting history behind the group.
Well, they aren't serving in an elected office for a party which has consistently decried racist practices and a state where Charlottesville happened, are they? There isn't even the excuse that this kind of behaviour was socially acceptable at the time.
Life is unfair...Yes and him doing that is unacceptable. My point is more that it has been a long time and if that was the only thing than he should rather atone by using his office to support and aid the African American community of VA rather than resign and hand the office to the Party who's just claim "Boys will be boys" over this.
I'm in no way questioning and relativizing that this is a horrible and inexcusable action. My point is that there's 40+ years in which the Person might have changed and if there is nothing else, should be given the chance of making up instead of political seppukku that can only benefit the GOP.
"You can reply to this Message!"The Lieutenant Governor would take over is my understanding, as the current Lieutenant Governor is an African American I feel like a resignation would make a fair amount of poetic sense.
A big part of the issue is going to be that this came out now by someone digging around, if he’s been open about being racist as a child and wanting to stone for that racism than it’s very different from if he’s hidden his past history with racism.

He will be replaced by the lieutenant governor, a democrat, so I can't even tell what you're objecting to here.
By the way, the lieutenant governor is African American, so a resignation would signal that Virginia is willing to confront the racism that has plagued the state for so long.
Life is unfair...Republicans: You did many racist things in full view of the public on national television. We'll only grudgingly censure you if it embarrasses our party too much.
Democrats: You did one racist thing once in your life. We will excommunicate you like the monster you are and will always be.
You know that I despise the cult of centrism, but I can't help but feel that there's a compromise position available. That said, it's rarely just "one racist thing", much like how Al Franken's "one indiscretion" turned into a big pattern of sexual misconduct.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"There's also a Racial Slur as nickname in the yearbook
This seems more than one 'stupid prank'.

I distinctly remember the issue of those missiles having been brought up here within the past few weeks. Maybe you missed that while skipping over several pages?
