Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Or "How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb"?
Huh. I didn't know they made that into a movie. I only know it from the posters in my theater class in high school. ...and that scene, apparently.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Booker has some problematic policies that would most likely hurt him in the primaries, such as his pro-Israel stance or his support for private equity which got him praise from the RNC.
And speaking of problematic policies, Biden has been revealed yet again to be behind the times,
advocating for segregation as recent as 1975. I swear, between this and the inevitable allegations against him that'll come out during the primaries, Biden isn't gonna stand a chance. Probably a good thing though.
What?
Do... you not see how a politician previously endorsing segregation would be a deal breaker?
I mean dude, there's a reason that dinosaurs should not be running for office. Especially not when the base is composed of people who aren't going to be like "oh well if it was 1975 that's totally different", as a candidate that kind of baggage is just awful. We should not be picking a blatantly weak candidate like that, we can't afford to give Trump such easy ammunition.
I'm not demanding perfection or denying the fact that people can change, just that there should be a line for practicalities' sake if nothing else.
Yes, obviously Biden would be better than Trump but if we get to the point where it's the choice between the two of them then clearly the Democratic Party has made a major mistake. I think short of Bloomberg or Gabbard Biden has the worst chances against Trump.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangUh I do see why it's a deal breaker, and yes its gives Trump ammo,it's almost too easy to use against him,to really make it stick they'll find something recent to use against him
yes, that makes him a weak candidate, and no I don't expect him to make it very far
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverElizabeth Warren Apologizes to Cherokee Nation for DNA Test
I'm not sure whether I agree with her decision to apologize or not: on the one hand, as the Cherokee Nation said, having one or more Native American ancestors would not by itself be sufficient to make Warren Native American or qualify her for tribal membership; on the other, she just took her test to justify her claim that, as her family told her, she did have at least partial Native ancestry, and to some degree the Cherokee Nation is criticizing her for making a claim she never made. Either way, I think she should have apologized right after the initial criticism from the Cherokee Nation, rather than making it a separate news item now.
♭What.Yeah, I've been on her side about this whole thing and this seems... weird. Like, she never claimed that she deserved membership or anything, the most committed that she ever was to claiming that she was Cherokee was sending in a recipe to a cookbook in the 80's.
And for all the supposed backlash she's gotten, you know what I haven't heard in a while? Trump calling her Pocahontas.
But reopening up these wounds? Not a great idea. An immediate apology (which honestly I don't think she needed to do, since she's apologizing for what a strawman version of Warren has done, not her) would've made sense, but not now.
I once stated there's no point in ever having more than 5000 nuclear weapons because at that point, you can annihilate anyone and/or most of the Earth's civilizations. And yet we have so so many more.
I mean, there's a point and it's second strike capability. You need to have enough nukes that even after getting nuked yourself, you can still achieve Mutually Assured Destruction.

I was on her side too, but I still get why she would do it. A lot of people still seemed to have a misunderstanding of what happened.
Though I'm uncomfortable people should apologize for things they didn't say or do because someone else misunderstood them, given the situation I see where it comes from.
Yeah, I don't think Biden really has a chance and honestly I'm glad. His time has long since passed.
With Warren, she really gives into the trolls too much it seems. In fact, she literally just made this page
where she debunks all the criticisms about her, including a conspiracy about her taking antipsychotic drugs. It's super unnecessary and isn't a good look for her.

Speaking of Warren, she has reportedly apologized to the Cherokee Nation
.
Ah, thought the conversation was about something else. Apologies.

Normally I agree, but honestly, I'm a-OK with being extra sensitive to Native tribes who are being defensive.
Ideally, I think a preemptive "Just to be clear, I'm not looking to prove membership or anything except that the words of my family are rooted in fact, and am not equating my ancestry with tribal living" or some such before releasing the results would've been ideal, but c'est la vie.

Even this is is something of a nothing Burger, it turns out the designers of Nuclear Weapons don't want them going off accidently so they have put quite the failsafe in them.
There is a 20 something character alpha-numeric lock on ignitor which is integrated to it, and if it has a wrong code entered even once the entire device has to be re-built... not reset, it breaks the ignitor and you have to rebuild the entire nuke.... without that part there just an inert ball of metals...
Which is why you never hear about the fact that those happen all the time, things like Droping a nuke in the St. Johns river, Droping 4 nukes on spain, Droping 2 nukes on the UK, Droping a Nuke in Canada, Loosing 2 nukes in the Mediterranean. Droping 2 nukes on north Carolina, or that time that they accidentally loaded nuclear bombs on a bomber headed for iraq instead of conventional ones because some idiot put the pallets next to each other.
Because for all that, even when they are droped out of the airplane as intended, they just kind of embed themselfs into the surface without the ingnitor activated....
And for all those accidents... They only had a radio-active material leak for the ones in Canada, UK, and Spain, which between them ruined less then an a couple acres of soil..... which you could make the argument is bad on its own but then you have to look at France, where whole segments of the country are desert where nothing grows and no one is allowed to enter.... because the lead and toxic elements from normal munitions have rendered the soil unable to support life, and UXO make it hazardous to traverse... And if you say "France hasn't had any major battles in 3 quarters of a century" you would be right, they are from fucking WWI.... Even conventional weapons decimate areas for perpetuity.
....
Basicly TL:DR; Nukes are safer then you think, and war is bad yo.
Ugh, that's kind of awful.
This alongside her decision to answer Trump's challenge and get an ancestry test does not paint a flattering picture, I really don't want a Presidential candidate who spends time to respond to cheap attacks. Especially when they're going against Trump, the king of cheap attacks.

Eh, I can understand the underpinning rationale - she looked at what happened to Clinton and decided to get ahead of the game on it. Unfortunately, we know Trump et. al. will employ the Gish Gallop approach to scandal - sling enough mud at a candidate, and some will stick, even if it's not true.
