The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Registering to vote is an artifact of the progressive era reforms to try to check the power of political machines in big cities. It’s kinda obsolete now, since I’m pretty sure it could easily be done automatically.

Is there any reason why in the US (and Germany, which I think is where Swanpride lives) eletronic ballots aren't used?

You'd think there'd be plenty of time to vote after you leave church.
Some voting locations ''are' churches.

Probably because electric ballets aren't considered secure,or something about the need to count them manually

Basically something that would voting easier is held back for a number a weird reasons,it's like they don't want to make voting too or accessible

Because if we have to trust voting mechanisms by Lowest Bidder I trust analog over digital.

Especially until we've found a way to keep Putin out of it.

Germany discussed electronic voting at one point, but, well, part of the democratic process is that every voter has the right to witness the counting of the ballots, so the discussion was never that serious and mostly came from the US-obsessed who thought it might save money - and then the whole mess in Florida happened during the Bush election and nobody mentioned the idea again.

That and the record of the US polities in cybersecurity is not very impressive. Electronic voting in theory can be as safe or even safer than handcounting ballots but that's only the theory.

And of course, there is institutional inertia.

We Canadians have our elections over an entire weekend (usually from Fri to Mon) and we have our early polling on the weekend or two before the official election weekend. We give you a lot of opportunities to vote in person is what I'm saying.

I think I posted this link before, but here's an article about why elections are still held on Tuesdays. Long story short, it's antiquated but the GOP doesn't want to change it for obvious reasons.

In Brazil we started using eletronic voting because of a history of curruption associated with paper voting.

By all accounts, it's a pretty reliable system which was set up, rather expensive, though.

I've always found it completely appalling how inconvenient voting can be in the US. It should not be difficult to exercise your fundamental civil rights.

Alongside the days you can vote what needs to change is the times you can vote, a federal mandate to provide X number of hours of voting at voting stations should be included. The polls close super early in the US, in the UK we don't close the polls until 10pm, some US places do it before most people finish work.

Voting is deliberately on the most inconvenient time for the poor. It is also set up to take long lines, be done by minimal staff, and with no parking.

It's meant to be discourage you from voting and for the most part it works.

Much like the electoral college and gerrymandering, the system favors those who have already been elected, and therefore there is a built in constituency against change.

The game is unrealistic. The Black Worker actually got to cast a vote which counted in the end.

So it looks like in 2015 ICE set up a bogus university to trap visa fraudsters. Points for creativity, I guess.

I'm reminded of the time during the 2010 elections when they had to close polling stations (thus some people couldn't vote) because there was suddenly a lot of people voting

I’m not awere of the incident you’re referring to, can you give a link to a new organisation (as opposed to the fascism apolagism magazine you linked) covering it?
