Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Probably because electric ballets aren't considered secure,or something about the need to count them manually
Basically something that would voting easier is held back for a number a weird reasons,it's like they don't want to make voting too or accessible

have a listen and have a link to my discord serverGermany discussed electronic voting at one point, but, well, part of the democratic process is that every voter has the right to witness the counting of the ballots, so the discussion was never that serious and mostly came from the US-obsessed who thought it might save money - and then the whole mess in Florida happened during the Bush election and nobody mentioned the idea again.
That and the record of the US polities in cybersecurity is not very impressive. Electronic voting in theory can be as safe or even safer than handcounting ballots but that's only the theory.
And of course, there is institutional inertia.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWe Canadians have our elections over an entire weekend (usually from Fri to Mon) and we have our early polling on the weekend or two before the official election weekend. We give you a lot of opportunities to vote in person is what I'm saying.

I think I posted this link before, but here's an article about why elections are still held on Tuesdays.
Long story short, it's antiquated but the GOP doesn't want to change it for obvious reasons.
Alongside the days you can vote what needs to change is the times you can vote, a federal mandate to provide X number of hours of voting at voting stations should be included. The polls close super early in the US, in the UK we don't close the polls until 10pm, some US places do it before most people finish work.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranVoting is deliberately on the most inconvenient time for the poor. It is also set up to take long lines, be done by minimal staff, and with no parking.
It's meant to be discourage you from voting and for the most part it works.

. Points for creativity, I guess.

I'm reminded
of the time during the 2010 elections when they had to close polling stations (thus some people couldn't vote) because there was suddenly a lot of people voting

Registering to vote is an artifact of the progressive era reforms to try to check the power of political machines in big cities. It’s kinda obsolete now, since I’m pretty sure it could easily be done automatically.
