Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, anyone who's saying this guarantees a Trump victory is being hyperbolic. The reality is that the possibility of this helping Trump in any way means that this would be a dick move from Coffeeman if he went ahead.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."For the record, I am basing off my considerations on Schultz on FiveThirtyEight
, which also agree that his is a long shot.
I have no doubt he's a longshot, just that the very idea that running and potentially helping Donald Trump is somehow worth it shows what a terrible person he is.
If he's doing it for publicity for his book (good catch by the way) that arguably makes it worse, or at least just as awful in a different way.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangSeems like a campaign against HR1 - that big anti corruption bill - is heating up
. For all what is holy and horny, don't let these people take the discourse over the bill over!
Lindsey Graham floats a dangerously irresponsible escalation of the slat wars
. Obviously, since the shutdown didn't work the biggest bomb of all has to come next, in this senator's opinion.

Didn't that guy won like 20% of all votes the first time he tried, back in '92? Wouldn't that be the worst possible result?
I don't think Starbucks Guy has much of a chance to win, myself, the problem is he getting enough Democrats to vote for him that he just helps Trump get reelected.
Edit:
Suuuuuure that's what you're concerned with. Not suspicious at all.

He did, but it is believed that he took more votes from George H. W. Bush then from Bill Clinton (who won). Interestingly enough, Perot's Economic positions are similar to Trump's (both focusing on an 'America First', Anti-Free Trade ideology), and Trump was a part of the Reform Party (and was their main Candidate in the 2000 Election).

Yeah, if Trump actually declared the US bankrupt, all because he can't get his Wall, he'd immediately become the most hated President we've ever had, even more hated then Bush Jr, Hoover and Buchanan. That would do so much damage to the United States, and then to the world at large, that a Republican would probably never be electable (at least nationally) ever again.
However, just because we hit the Debt Ceiling, doesn't mean we automatically declare Bankrupt. It would essentially just force another Government Shutdown. Our Government can't really go Bankrupt without Trump and/or Congress saying 'We're Bankrupt', and they would know that declaring our nation Bankrupt would destroy everything.

if trump declared the US bankrupt would he sell Alaska back to the Russians

For those who dont know, HR 1 incls the following provisions:
The wide-ranging bill would require Super PA Cs to make their donors public, enact lobbying registration requirements with more oversight of foreign agents, set up nonpartisan redistricting commissions to end partisan gerrymandering, and create national automatic voter registration, among other actions.
All good things, though not enough to make our elections fair again (MEFA).
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.

Evil Turtle's op-ed on that anti-corruption bill is almost hilariously poorly argued. "Oh no, a few thousand civil servants might go and do different work for a few days while still being paid and public employees might actually get time to vote!".

A GOP state senator in New Jersey, Dawn Addiego, has switched parties.

I suspect that for a lot of them it's spineless fear of being primaried by Trump loyalists if they say even a single negative thing about him, or just party loyalty that can be stretched to the breaking point. If memory serves that's a thing for many Republicans, for example some of them have said that privately many Republicans believe that climate change is an actual menace but they'd be called RINOs if they say so openly.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWell with politicians switching parties seems like it’d be something liable to cost you your job. And this in general is the thing to keep in mind with politics: whatever their positions are, their jobs are on the line.
Leviticus 19:34Suggestion:Impose a length of time (no idea how long but long enough that it determines if they've truly changed) party rule on someone changing party,if your a republican suddenly saying your a democratic you should still be considered a republican,I'm surprised no one has exploited it to steal districts from the party they've just joined

What I am questioning more is
I don't think anyone's saying that it's guaranteed, just that by making it possible he's being an odious asshat.
