The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's the same problem here in Brazil: if you only care to know what history classes teach, then social issues don't exist, racism and misogyny are stuff of the past, and so on.

It really is no wonder then, that when someone complains about any social issue, someone else will always claim they are "whining".

Edit: How many times has a third-party won the presidential elections in the US?

[up]A third party has never won, at least not without functionally replacing one of the other major parties.

The worry isn't that Schultz will win, it's that he will help get Trump re-elected

"Say what you will about Tarantino but we need stories like Django where the KKK and slavers are treated as the Always Chaotic Evil psychopaths they are."

No only that but as buffon, that part about their bag in their head dosent let them to see is hilarious.

But in general, since the KKK dosent go for the "right"(read:white) population, people just really got a bad feeling and leave.

@Mr Hellboy: as in he'll splinter the Democratic vote, right? Fair enough.

[up] That and the fact that Trump is now saying he hopes he'll run because it would help his re-election chances.

Oh, and Schultz himself saying he would rather see Trump win again than someone "too liberal" like Sanders or Warren

The Republicans have outright stated to have helped Jill Stein.

The Russians have also been confirmed as doing so.

I guess we can take comfort in the fact that it's not likely he'll even get nominated... right? Hopefully?

I'm a little confused as to why anyone who might vote for Warren would vote for him instead. He's a former corporate CEO.

Do we think Warren has a better chance than Biden?

Mueller’s probe is almost done.

Oh, neat. Then I look forward to moving on from arguing with Republicans about whether Mueller's investigation is a "WITCH HUNT" to arguing with them about whether Mueller's "WITCH HUNT BIASED FAKE NEWS DOCUMENT" has any credibility.

With the shutdown over (for now), the State of the Union address is scheduled for next Tuesday, and now we also know who will be giving the opposition response.

Stacey Abrams, the Democratic candidate who narrowly lost the race for Georgia governor in 2018, will deliver the Democrats' rebuttal to President Trump's State of the Union address on Feb. 5, according to two sources familiar with the decision.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told reporters on Tuesday that he had asked Abrams to deliver the rebuttal three weeks ago. Party officials familiar with the plans say that Abrams will make the address Tuesday night from her hometown of Atlanta.

"She is just a great spokesperson. She's an incredible leader. She has led the charge for voting rights which is at the root of just about everything else," Schumer said.

[up][up][up]Stacey Abrams was able to generate a lot of excitement in Georgia. Everyone was talking about her, no one was talking about Kemp. While I don't agree with her, she's someone who I think genuinely believes she is doing the right things for Georgia and America. I'm glad that she's getting more publicity.

Stacey didn't lose the race.

It was stolen.

I mean that without hyperbole. It was criminal activity that cost her the position and Kemp should be in jail. The election is completely invalid and carries mandate for rule.
