The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The relevant tweet mentioned in the article:

Never thought I’d say this but I think @johnrobertsFox and @GillianHTurner @FoxNews have even less understanding of the Wall negotiations than the folks at FAKE NEWS CNN & NBC! Look to final results! Don’t know how my poll numbers are so good, especially up 19% with Hispanics?

21 days goes very quickly. Negotiations with Democrats will start immediately. Will not be easy to make a deal, both parties very dug in. The case for National Security has been greatly enhanced by what has been happening at the Border & through dialogue. We will build the Wall!

The U.S. and Japan both have high debt to GDP ratios and extremely stable currencies with lots of investment. The theory on which Germany's inflation obsession is based is just plain wrong.

You have heard of the lost score right? To use the Japanese economy is not a good thing, the absolutely shitty economy is one of the reasons Abe managed to rise to power and even he has not been able to get it under control.

So like, no our economy is not a positive trait, and should not be held as a good example, it is far from the worst one in the world but it isn't exactly strong either... its like using the US as a positive example of violent crime control, sure there are worse countries... but just look at how many mass shootings happen and you can see its not good either.

It was bad enough Obama compared the amercian recession to it as a warning of where things could get

....

And the economic problems are STILL going.

Being held all by the Bank of Japan did not mitigate the large debt out of existence.

You guys are right that 1:1 debt to spending is fully a myth, but you cant just infinatly pile it up either, there is a breaking point.

Japan has the opposite problems than would be predicted by any hypothesis that recommends austerity because the government debt isn't actually the problem. The usual fearmongering is "deficits will drive up interest rates and cause inflation" but Japan has negative rates and still has deflation or very low inflation because the Bank of Japan knows damn well that it is in charge of interest rates here, not the bond markets. Short-selling Japanese debt in prediction that Japan is about to go bankrupt, crash the bond market or massively inflate or something due to high public debt and poor demographics is called the Widowmaker Trade because it always fails but idiots keep going for it.

Japan had a giant private debt bubble that popped and requires constant and massive government spending to get out of until the private sector is done deleveraging, hence private debt at 200%+ of GDP as well. The high public debt is a symptom of the necessary response to the crisis, not the cause, and any public debt being held by the central bank may as well not be there given the government is saying it owes money to itself.

[up][up] Tell that the huge number of Japanese who are living in card board boxes. Literally.

Look, Japanese have a very different culture. And part of their culture is to hide the problems they have. So I recommend to you to take a really, really close look at who pays the price for Japans success. It isn't pretty.

Not to mention that Japan is a country which is nearly completely controlled by its big companies. It is just impossible to compare it with, well, anything.

I'm going to echo the others in saying we're going off-topic. If we want to rehash the endless debates about the Euro and inflation and debt, we should take it up in the Economics thread.

To get the discussion in another direction going...how long until Mueller gets to Kushner? I mean, Roger Stone would be one level under him, right?

So I was looking for Richard Nixon comparisons and apparently he's the only president to ever resign,I think Trump could end up joining him once he fails to get his wall, then if History repeats itself Pence will join Ford in the "Never actually elected president but got the job anyway" club

[up]What he said.

Trump isn't really in touch with reality, I think that's more than clear at this point, and will remain convinced he's the best thing that ever happened to the US even if the entire infrastructure of the country were to collapse under him.

People probably said the same thing about Nixon untill Watergate happened, history does sometimes repeat itself so perhaps what brings him down isn't the wall but something else Muller finds that lands him in a similar level of guilty, with Nixion it was ordering a break in at the Watergate hotel with Trump it could be ordering the hacking of Democratic party's datebase

Post-shutdown negotiations look brutal for Trump

https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/427163-post-shutdown-negotiations-look-brutal-for-trump

Lawmakers in both parties are skeptical about President Trump’s chances of securing funding for his wall on the Mexican border after a 35-day partial government shutdown that bruised the White House’s political standing.

The deal reached last week gives Trump and Congress until Feb. 15 to reach a new deal to prevent another partial shutdown, and the president is demanding new legislation again that would fund his signature campaign issue.

Democrats seem unlikely to budget any money for a border wall, and even if they did, lawmakers say such a deal would likely require Trump to include significant immigration reforms, such as giving immigrants known as Dreamers a pathway to citizenship or permanent residency.

That would be a tough nut to crack in only three weeks, and the concessions could also damage Trump with his base.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) set the tone immediately after Trump agreed to reopen the government by declaring Friday that she will not change her stance on opposing money for a border wall, which she had previously called “immoral.”

“Have I not been clear on a wall? I’ve been very clear on the wall,” she told reporters Friday when asked whether her position had changed at all because of the decision to reopen government agencies.

Wasn't Nixon generally seen as a perfectly competent if very corrupt politician? He probably knew that his career was over after the Watergate broke out.

Trump doesn't seem to possess such a level of self-awareness.
