The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'd phrase it as a negotiation technique, but yhea.

Probably this:

Democrats are not the party of financial responsibility (Neither are the Republicans, but that's a different post). I don't think that's a controversial thing to say.

To which the general response was "Say what now?"

Shutdown bill had passed the House.

Part of me wonders if they're fastlaning this bill to get it to Trump before he can turn on Fox News and see Hannity going nuts on him.

The White House "coincidentally" loses TV and cable reception for several hours while the bill is on its way to get signed.

I'd say it's partly that. Between Trump being called the biggest wimp ever by Coulter and conservative commentators losing their minds, he is currently a huge laughingstock amongst far-right pundits.

Linking the Washington Post is pretty pointless, it's rather hard to have any idea what the article is because of the paywall.

I found a tweet relevant to this news. basically, this is a tactic used in torture by giving us a break to see if people will cave. If not, the torture begins again. Rinse and repeat until they get the desired result.

No, this isn't right at all.

Trump wanted the wall to be funded or else the government wouldn't get funding, Pelosi didn't want the wall to be funded and wanted the government to be funded.

Pelosi won.

To treat this as an intentional tactic of Trump's instead of a very real defeat is simply dishonest, it's the kind of revisionism I expect from Trump supporters. Your source is a gigantic hack.

For those who want a visual explanation, this is what happened.

Could we not call sources hacks without citing a basis for that opinion?

Additionally, Trump has already threatened to shut the government down in three weeks. It’s entirely possible that, as a natural bully, Trump fully intends to resume being awful when he doesn’t immediately get his way. Hope for the best, plan for the worst.

I did cite a basis for my opinion, Trump is backing down from his 31 day objective that we fund the wall and submitting to the Democratic demand to fund the government without the wall.

That is a defeat by literally any serious metric.

Anyone who says that is a tactic instead of a defeat is a hack.

A defeat does not need to be perpetual to be a defeat, he was beaten and if tries again he'll be beaten again.

The writer of our timeline should be fired, they clearly have run out of ideas.

That's the kind of name a Dark Elf would have, does he go around in improbably spiky armor while wearing black eyeliner?

The idea that a clear defeat like this is part of Trump's plan is hilariously pathetic, that's not a message that's going to resonate anywhere.

Even Trump supporters have a hard time pretending he hasn't been defeated soundly.

That’s not what a hack is. And I think the word shouldn’t be thrown around lightly. Trump has pretty effectively cratered our institutional norms and filled the White House with family members and yes men; he’s a bully and an authoritarian by instinct. So excuse me for being cautious and concerned that this is only a temporary respite.

I'm fairly sure that this is the best move Trump could make. It's not a defeat in any stretch of the imagination and will allow him to rebound far better than if it continued.
