Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That’s generous of you. Given how awful Julian Assange is and how much Wikileaks has helped the growth of authoritarianism, I feel complete disdain for their supposed good intentions.
I believe in the free exchange of information and its usefulness as an enemy of authoritarianism.
Unfortunately, authoritarian governments resisted heavily and subverted any lofty goals the organization may have once had.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.> I believe in the free exchange of information and its usefulness as an enemy of authoritarianism.
Except all the infomation posted by Wikileaks has undermined democracy, their goals were never anything other then causing chaos, which is why the Russian Government found them so useful,Julian has been their useful idiot for a long time
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverYeah, whatever their stated 'Goal', they have always been nothing more than hatchet-people for the destabilization of western governments.
And there's a difference between 'Well meaning and ultimately Fallen Heroes' and 'Lied in your face the whole time.'
Wikileaks is honestly closer to the latter.

"You can reply to this Message!"It would be nice if Assange had actually done anything that could be construed as "attacking authoritarians with free information", rather than "aiding and abetting authoritarians with selective releases of manipulated information".

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Now this seems pretty bad.
If Atlanta follows suit and people can't make it to the Super Bowl next week...?
WHEW. Shit's gonna get bad.
New Survey coming this weekend!Honestly not sure how it can be construed as a metaphorical bread and circus, let alone a literal one, though.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.
Also a valid concern. The problem with this kind of situation is it might end up backfiring on everyone, not just the guilty.
For example, the Nika Riots of Constantinople. Admittedly, that had a host of other problems, but the point stands.

I hold the secrets of the machine. With Bread and Circuses, the term goes back to a saying that Romans were mostly concerned about food and entertainment, not any real principles of ruling. As long as they got bread and circuses, they were happy.
With people missing the superbowl due to the shutdown, that would be a failure of the government to protect what people really want, so it would make the state look bad.
Leviticus 19:34I'm glad Roger Stone is arrested, but I wish Mueller could get Trump already. I know investigations take time, but it is pretty obvious he did get Russian "help". Meanwhile he is doing tons of damage to the country.
My only hope is that one day, Trump gets treated exactly like he treated everyone else.
I remain unconvinced that there was ever a time that WikiLeaks was not a Russian espionage tool designed to cripple the United States and erode faith in our democratic institutions by publishing state secrets.
That we only learned that in 2016 does not mean it was untrue before 2016.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.But then again why should the state have secrets in the first place?Keeping things from the public erode's people trust in them, and if anything the Government needs to show it's willingness to be open in order to combat the spread of false information
