Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

WELP.
"Yup. That tasted purple."I wouldn't even waste my farts on them.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Actually, I doubt Mitch is enjoying this situation. He's caught in an impossible conflict between ideology and reality. He's so deep in the Sunk Cost Fallacy that it'll take a team of archaeologists to find him a thousand years from now.
All that said, I have no sympathy for him at all, because he goose-stepped into his position with eyes wide open, and is now causing incalculable harm to the country.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Speaking of sympathy... what is its antithesis? Because I've been feeling that for him and his ilk for a long time right now, but I have no idea what the proper term for it is.
It can't be "apathy", because that's just "zero" to sympathy's "positive". Is it "antipathy"? The dictionary definition uses "dislike", which seems like a severely watered down version of what I'm feeling.
... Or is the antithesis of sympathy the same thing as hate and malice?

Huh. Someone needs to invent a word for "extreme antipathy", then.

Ugh, now you reminded of the hideously long German compound words that I've encountered in the past. Seriously, why are you Germans so obsessed with agglutinating words so much?

Ohoho, do I take pleasure in his suffering. I honestly believe he's not suffering anywhere near as much as he should, and in fact I believe it's been made clear that the amount of suffering I want to see visited upon him is too much for you guys' stomachs.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Trump White House grows eager to escape losing shutdown fight
After a day of failed Senate action, Trump and his advisers realize they may never win over Democrats in a battle that is costing them dearly
https://www.politico.com/story/2019/01/24/trump-white-house-losing-shutdown-fight-1125033
This article seems to suggest something alone those lines.
To be fair to Marq, we are talking about a man who pushed a healthcare bill that would strip 22 million people of their insurance just so to cut taxes for the rich
.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWhat with the whole Roger Stone thing that just happened, I'm wondering if ol' Donnie is definitely going to declare a national emergency just as a distraction, in a desperate attempt to try to make people forget
Futile gesture. The shutdown didn't make us forget and this won't either
The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.
