Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Thump is both self-centered enough to do that and at the same time so stupid that I seriously doubt he could actually connect those dots unless someone specifically explained it to him.
On him folding to Pelosi on the SOTU, I take this as a good sign. Any other day, Trump would fight tooth and nail to show her up. If he's willing to concede here, I'm thinking the shutdown isn't much further off.
So you know the reporter who broke the story about the unnamed rancher finding all those prayer rugs on the Mexican border?
Turns out she used to work for FAIR
.
Quelle Surprise.
"Yup. That tasted purple."Conspiracy theory time: The shutdown continues because it prevents anyone from looking deeper into Trump's criminal dealings.
I mean, it's not really a conspiracy theory that the shutdown fucking everything up is a feature, not a bug.
The investigation into Trump violating the emoluments clause, the EPA being unable to do its job, the IRS being unable to do its job, failing border and national security, all of it helps the GOP. Other than approval numbers, the shutdown is a massive boon to Trump and the GOP, which is why those approval numbers (and in particular getting the blame where it needs to be) is so important.

The upper middle class frat boys and alpha male wanna be's who are Trump's core supporters couldnt care less what happens to the rest of the country, so long as they get their tax breaks and white male privileges. How excited the rest of us get over the shutdown is amusing to them.
That said, neither Trump nor the Republicans can win elections on that vote alone.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart. Its times like this that I wish the South would just split off from the rest of the United States and become its own country again. I guarantee that the GOP as it is today wouldn't be nearly as popular without those states, and the next time I hear a Texas gloat about their supposed ability to secede I'm going to to tell them to go ahead.

Speaking as someone who lives in the south? I'm sorry, but screw that noise.
I'm a proud liberal. I fight for causes on the left. There's a lot of people like me. They're all over. They just won Doug Jones a Senate seat not long ago. Andrew Gillum, Stacey Abrams, Randall Woodfin? Are part of that movement.
Stop pretending we don't exist or matter and that our fight doesn't yield results with this "oh, the South should form its own country."
But just leave us all to the mercy of Republican governments. That's real progressive.

RE Sheila Jackson Lee: I just read the article, and just want to clarify in case some people haven't actually done so for some reason yet have started to form opinions about her... The sexual assault accusation by the fired employee is not aimed at Jackson Lee, but a third person who also worked in the same organization.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Trump Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross on Suffering Federal Workers: Let Them Get Loans
How naive of me to expect basic human empathy from this administration.
That would absolutely be reprehensible.
The timeline is really... interesting.
The assault took place in 2015, when the accuser was 19. She got a job in Jackson's office in November of 2017 (so she was likely 21 or 22) and she was on staff until the end of March (aka the end of the quarter) so it could genuinely be coincidental. A junior staffer being let go after four months is not unheard of.

What else is new...
Watch SymphogearFor some of them, this is how they starve the "beast". Mc Connel will go back to Kentucky next time and run on how he helped reduce the Federal budget.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart. This is a feature, not a bug. Kill the Poor is his modus operandi, and the irs being swamped just means he can ignore taxes too. It’s a win-win.
Speaking of that, If anyone is looking for a volunteering opportunity to help Furloughed Federal Workers, a really good one would be "Chefs for Feds", that provides hot, chef prepared meals to Federal Employees, lead by José Andrés
and World Central Kitchen.
They already have places set up in DC, and are starting to expand to other states.

Representative Shelia Jackson Lee (D-TX) has resigned as chairwoman at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation after a former worker accused Lee of firing her after talking about a possible sexual assault claims.
