Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If Harris wins Iowa (I find it unlikely but stranger things can happen) it’s pretty much a wrap as she’s going to Steamroll everyone else. Hell even if she only wins SC, Having California be so early is a huge almost insurmountable lead just based off how Dems allegation of delegates.
I think her floor is number 2.
New Survey coming this weekend!Yeah, it's like how saying that White Supremacy is real and bad isn't demonizing white people it's just accurately describing a systemic problem.
Good bankers (like Good White People) who aren't the problem have nothing to fear.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangIn addition to her animosity towards an entire industry, I recall that she also agreed with the "DNC rigged the primaries" narrative before eventually walking it back. That only further convinced me that she's not my ideal President.
Seriously, wtf was she thinking going along with that bullshit?

Disgusted, but not surprisedNo one has announced, and odds are he'll win practically unopposed.
I can fully believe that Trump will be a one term President, but the idea that he'll be stopped at the primary is frankly unbelievable.

Ooooh, I had forgotten that.
That... is not a good look.
Relatedly I just remembered that it's on record that she's supported tariffs
, which is frankly a deal breaker. I simply cannot tolerate that kind of protectionism idiocy, we are not a developing country that needs to protect nascent industries, tariffs benefit specific sectors of the economy at the expense of the greater whole. I see no reason to believe that the benefits in any way outweight the costs.
I really hope she moves away from that position.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangSo in my shallow understanding of American politics, which Democratic candidate should I teamstack towards? Not that it matters much because my Canadian Citizenship renders my opinion jack shit. However, even I know that the Democrats will need to unite around one candidate if they want the biggest chance of defeating Humpty Trumpty.

ASAB: All Sponsors Are Bad.I like what I've seen from most of them (aside from the aforementioned Gabbard), though some of the other circles I orbit have preemptively written off one candidate or another as a nonstarter for various reasons (particularly Harris and her record as state AG). I'm content to wait for more concrete platforms and policy goals before I commit to a particular candidate.

Fair enough. Better to wait for the results to come in to thin the list of candidates and pick the winning one. But I do have a blacklist, such as this Gabbard lady who seems to be a softie towards the real life version of Modern Warfare's Starter Villain and has a number of other naughty things in her backlog. Warren and Harris seem to be safe candidates though.

ASAB: All Sponsors Are Bad.Technically, all what Warren did was to say that she's OK with putting tariffs "on the table" in trade discussions. Not explicitly supporting a particular version of them. And if memory serves, then-DNC chair Debbie Wasserman-Schulz did engage in questionable actions during the primary, which is part of the reason why she is no longer DNC chair in fact.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThat's not a bad point, for fairness sake if nothing else it's important to point out the particularities of her position.
Still, putting tariffs "on the table" when it comes to economic policy is like putting a border wall "on the table" when discussing border security.
It's a very bad no-good policy that does not say good things about a politician's connection to reality.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang> Warren isn't popular with Rich people
I like her more already. Anyone that makes the rich squirm - especially after those stunts they've pulled with the voodoo economics that is neoclassical ideology - is A-OK with me.
Sorry, not sorry. I hope she wins and screws over Wall Street and the Wealthy over hard.
I hold the secrets of the machine. The funny thing about that is Trump is doing more to harm the economy right now than Warren could do in the worst nightmares of Wall Street executives. Yet they'll vote for him over her because she's saying mean things about them. Truly, the egos are fragile at the top.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"@M84: Bankers have too much power over voters in influencing politics, which is what Warren has always opposed. Having a family member in the profession doesn't stop it from being wrong.
Life is unfair...That the financial industry needs some regulation is true. I just don't think Warren is the one who should be in charge of it. Someone who has made a career of treating Wall Street as her personal white whale, someone who has proven she is not above pandering to populist bullshit narratives like "DNC rigged primaries", someone who attempted to claim Cherokee descent on grounds so spurious that even the Cherokee Nation called her out on it...
She's not my first choice.
Disgusted, but not surprised

Saying a profession or industry is exploiting consumers and making too much money isn’t demonizing them??? It’s... uh.... pretty factual.
