Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Oh, I thought it was the opposite, that the HOR was the bicameral legislative and that Congress and the Senate were the lower and higher Chambers thereof.
He's not a problem, he's a challenge. One the Democrats can rise to, or dismiss at their own risk, and at everyone's expense.
Critiques of him on the matter of attention to minorities astound me, when 'be patient, be quiet, endure, we'll get to you' has always been the Democrat Liberal's way. To quote MLK:
"First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season.""
The failings of the Democrat party are structural, but projecting them on others is lazy.
I am indeed glad that the party is changing and that the people who need it most are finally being given a voice and a reason to vote, instead of chasing after the mythical median voter.

To be fair, the Democrats have already risen to his challenge, by changing their party platform to include more progressive positions, and by helping elect more progressive candidates, though one could argue that they have farther to go.

I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart. The problem with Sanders' vision is that it puts minorities on the back of the bus. He's repeatedly prioritized economic justice and the issues of "ordinary Americans" over racial justice, thinking that if the former is settled the latter will just magically fix itself. He's also criticized "identity politics" (while simultaneously emphasizing the "white working class"), which, as far as I'm concerned, kinda locks you out of being a true progressive.

i'm tired, my friendIndifference to minority issues and criticizing 'identity politics' is a fairly large red-flag, I'd hardly consider it unreasonable for a person (especially one who happens to be a minority) to view that as a deal breaker.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangMy point is, he's not the progressive hero his base hails him as, and as I type this, I wonder how many times I've had to explain this to someone in this thread.
Sidebar, it says something about American politics when your platform can push minorities to the wayside and still be considered "progressive".
i'm tired, my friendIn other news, a certain U.S. Representative took a few minutes to drop in for a guest appearance on a Twitch charity stream earlier today. Color me impressed with her.

To quote the WP.
The legitimacy of Sanders as a progressive is unimpeachable. He may not focus on every topic that any given group on the left cares about, but he focuses on those that we all care about and which affect all of us. Furthermore, this discussion is a fractious waste of time and energy which could be better spent coordinating.

That doesn't actually make as strong a case for him as you think it does. It doesn't really disprove anything his detractors (including myself) have said about him.
"Economic progress helps minorities too!" is a bullshit argument. It's not an excuse to downplay or ignore "identity politics" (or as it should be called, civil rights). Anyone who does try that has no place calling themselves progressive.
After one too many racially tone-deaf gaffes from him over the years, many of us here are well and truly sick of Sanders. He's far from my first choice as Democratic Party nominee.

Disgusted, but not surprisedYou mean like American policing? Or discriminatory hiring practices?
This kind of myopia is exactly the problem with Sanders and his (white) supporters; they think everyone else has the same problems they do, and only those problems. They don't seem to be able to fathom that there are some issue unique to specific racial demographics.
i'm tired, my friend
