The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Seriously, what does it take to make him realize that he's utterly stupid and incompetent as a businessman and politician?
A one on oen sit-down with God to tell him how bad he fucked up?
believe it or not, the media is more than headlines designed to attract readers.
Not really, at least if we're talking about print - most people don't read past the first paragraph of an article, if they even read that much. Headlines that are "neutral" in implicating both Trump and the Democrats are making Trump look better than he's capable of.

@Blueninja: but thats why fewer people read news articles anymore-because they know that seemingly objective headlines really aren't. Its simultaneously evidence that people are more discerning than we think they are, and that the Republicans, Trump in particular, are less effective than they think they are.

Of course, there is a group of propaganda disseminators who simply want the public to distrust all sources equally, so there is that. But thats not helping Trump right now.

I doubt anyone on this forum would have voted for Gabbard, but here's another reason not to.

Gabbard says Democrats share blame in shutdown logjam

Hawaii congresswoman and Democratic candidate for president Tulsi Gabbard said Sunday that her party’s leadership was not blameless for the partial government shutdown that is now approaching a month, accusing both sides of posturing and refusing to compromise.

“The problem here is that this issue, like so many others in Washington, are being relegated to partisan politics,” she said in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union."

“Where if a Republican is putting forward a proposal, Democrats are going to shoot it down. If Democrats are putting forward a proposal, Republicans are going to shoot it down, really thinking about which party can call a win on this issue.”

The result, she said, is a loss for the country and especially the 800,000 federal workers affected by the shutdown, which has been driven over disagreements about immigration.

I wonder if she realizes the same people she's supposedly trying to appeal to don't want Democrats to cave to a bad deal.

Seems perfectly cromulent with her past record on criticizing her own party.

I hope that Gabbard running gets her enough publicity that she gets primaries in 2020.

She's been primaried before, but refuses to debate her opponents (sound familiar). At this point, I think less of her districts' Democrats for not removing her.

Its all the more jarring considering we have someone like Gillibrand running, who actually won in a conservative district without being a cretin.

Gabbard's district is far from conservative, too. About as blue as Vermont and Vermont's 3 congresscritters are pretty ideologically loyal Democrats.

[up][up]I can recall one Republican ever winning in Hawaii and that was purely because there were two democrats running who split the vote between them enough for the other guy to get in. Even then it was only a few percentage points over the next candidate, and since at the end of the day over 60% of voters picked a democrat I doubt it lasted too long.

Remember several things:

Hawaii only has 2 reps, with open primaries. Thus, Republicans can vote for Gabbard, and she keeps her exposure very limited. couple with low turnout, and a very...logistically difficult state to campaign in? (Gabbard's district spams 8 islands)

That said, one state rep has already announced he's going to take her on in 2020.

Two senators and one congressman.

Okay. Is it normal to conflate the Senate into Congress?

LSBK Since: Sep, 2014
#267949: Jan 20th 2019 at 4:04:16 PM

That's not conflating anything, the Senate is part of Congress; Congress is both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

That Representatives are informally called "Congressmen" for some reason, doesn't change that.
