Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Tech Priest 90: To be fair, the President actually can't unilaterally order a nuclear attack. The Nuclear Football is not a literal remote control for the US's nuclear arsenal.
Leviticus 19:34Television Is Trying To Kill Us, when the President confuses the media with the reality.
That is actually the result of Richard Nixon, FYI.
I recommend reading RAVEN'S ROCK (a nonfiction book about nuclear protocols and bunkers) where we have actual documents talking about how the Joint Chiefs of Staff made a move to prevent Richard Nixon from having access to his nuclear launch authority in the last days of his Presidency.
They were afraid his alcoholism and depression would result in him attempting to nuke Russia.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Hey, remember that contentious vote on a bill in the House of Representatives? It apparently nearly became a fistfight
.
What's funny is that R's are slamming Trump because his deal is for 5.7 billion dollars for the wall, which was exactly what he had been asking for the entire time. They're slamming him because that's not even close to enough money.
I think Trump just genuinely has no concept of how much things cost, he was getting shut down when he asked for 5.7, the full wall would need over 20 billion. There's absolutely no way Trump wins this. He doesn't want to compromise at all, and even his compromise is embarrassingly insufficient for both sides.
The only way this can end is if Schumer and Trump admit defeat and give up on the wall. The only thing to do is wait until they do. Unfortunately, that doesn't look like it'll happen any time soon.
Bad news, basically all major news outlets are blaming both sides for the shutdown continuing now, as they all seem to fail to understand that Trump reopening the government isn’t him giving something up (which means the Dems should give something up) but him doing his dam job.
There’s a serious risk that this now turns against the Dems because the press are to happy to try and make Trump look equal to the Dems so that they can get views.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI honestly am optimistic that at least the base won't see it that way. I know a big criticism for a lot of people has been the Democrats don't stick with their guns enough. Well, they're doing that now.
Read my stories!Yeah but that’s polls from before Trump’s speech tonight, which appears to have successfully convinced the press that both sides are to blame, if the press then convince the public the blame is going to start going the other way.
Dear god are the American media easy to manipulate, Trump barely has to try.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranWhat you have to understand is that Trump is doing exactly what his core voters want him to do, which is standing up to the rest of the world on behalf of their "tribe"- entitled middle class white guys who think that everything in life is a competition, all good things should go to winners, and anyone who complains is a loser. They want Trump to die before he gives one inch to the Dems.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.

He won't. He can't. Because if he does, he'll be unable to handle the outcome that he's worth precisely zero. For his own sanity, he'll keep telling himself the comforting lie that he's capable and everyone else is out to get him.
Fragile self-esteem isn't a problem until you're sitting on the big red button that is the White House. That's what worries me.
EDIT: Pagetopper. The joy.
