Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm sorry Tien, but I must go all out.

Isn't the "wall" just going to be a line of iron bars?

Which becomes a "fool me once" moment. I doubt the Democrats will bite, but then again I also hope that they find away to bypass Trump and his obsession with keeping out Mexicans and open the goverment without his input. Such a result would be a win for Democrats, and by extension, basic human decency.

They cannot open the Government unless they either get enough Congress Republicans (including shoving Mitch Mc Connel in a closet) to override Trump. A budget is a law, meaning it needs the Signature of POTUS.
Personally I'd consider trading border wall funding against HR 1 and reopening the government. And in form of an omnibus not individual bills so that when it comes to the Senate Republicans can't cherry pick out the parts they don't like. Perhaps I'd add electoral reform in as well.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIf Trump agrees to pass DACA and actual immigration reform in exchange for a few billion in funding for a border wall, then that might be a deal worth taking. Yes, a wall is still useless and terrible, but if we can get something that we've needed for decades in exchange? That could be a fair trade.
Of course, that's contingent on 1) it being actual, significant, permanent change in immigration policy. Just extending DACA by itself, or any other minor and/or temporary change, wouldn't be good enough. And 2) it would have to be baked into the same legislation, so that it's the same law both providing wall funding and making immigration policy changes. Otherwise I fully expect Trump and/or the Senate GOP to agree to the deal but then refuse to actually pass the appropriate legislation.
I very much doubt that Trump is willing to offer that sort of thing — it's akin to admitting defeat, which he'll never do willingly.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.See I thought that Trump's offer was an extension
. That is it does not meet 1)

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThe problem with accepting even a generous deal for the Wall is that paying for the Wall is a potent symbol in its own right and thus would almost certainly count as a rather large victory for Trump, which I will point out is not irrelevant.
Trump, as we all know, wants to do very bad things so a victory for him is against all of our interests.
Still, there is zero chance that he'll actually offer any generous terms, so the point is moot.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangWow. "Reverse racism!" in response to Po C making fun of white people. This is the definition of white tears.
I'll just let Michael Harriot explain this:
I think we can agree that America has a race problem and the only way to address it is to begin from an honest, objective starting point. I am aware that white people are so accustomed to living in a world that offers them so little resistance, that honesty sometimes feels like hate.
I think it's incredibly stupid to make fun of a group of people and then act as of them taking offense is unreasonable or unexpected.
Also, "white tears"? Wow, you really are trying to as rude as possible, aren't you?

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangAs a white person I do object, I can sure as hell oppose racist jokes against black people while also viewing mockery about white people as offensive.
Furthermore, how big a deal it is or isn't has not been said by myself or anyone else. I merely took issue with the asinine position that white people taking issue with it is somehow unreasonable, if one decides to mock a group of people then they don't get to complain when that group of people gets angry.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThis is from three pages ago and the person most likely isn't posting anymore but all the same:
There is no "both sides" here. Donald wants funding for a project solely to satisfy his own ego, a project that is not only incredibly xenophobic, but completely idiotic and impractical in serving its xenophobic purpose. Wanting to oppose that project is the only right thing to do. I don't think anyone seriously wants the shutdown to continue any longer, but Donald doesn't understand the meaning of the word "no" because he's a spoiled brat and the Democrats have no reason to accept his demands, both from a moral and practical standpoint.
Also, I'm not a mod but seriously guys this food tangent has been going on for way too long already. Move it to the race or food threads if you want to continue it.
It's nice that you can go after an easy strawman instead of addressing people's actual arguments.

So, the working class white families who lost family businesses because of the rise of industrial blandness and industrialised shopping habits in combination with wartime rationing are getting punched up at because white can only mean privileged.
Good to know.
Whole cottage industries and farming communities have died to blandness and cultures changed for the more unhealthy as regional differences were steadily undermined in the race for efficiency. But, hey... punch away.

Coming in to the conversation, can we all please take a second? Because we're flying awfully close to the point where the mod comes in and starts thumping things.
Let's just take a minute, and maybe move this to the Race Relations thread.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerWhat strawman? I'm just stating a basic rule of comedy: taking shots at an entity more powerful than the joke teller is more acceptable than taking shots at one weaker than the teller.
POC taking shots at white people for not liking spice is the former: white people are dominant in the US, culturally, politically, etc. White people taking shots at other ethnicities for their food choices is the latter; members of the dominant group mocking those beneath them in the broad social heirarchy.
