The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Thumped: for switching the discussion from the topic to a person. Doesn't take many of this kind of thump to bring a suspension. Stay on the topic, not the people in the discussion.

While I accept that US national politics lately is a kindergarten (and #WheresMitch anyway?) this oddball posting is not OK. Let's move on.

I think the more that Mitch McConnell is given scrutiny and even public humiliation, the better. He is doing everything he can to keep the shutdown going

One benefit about this is that this is exposing what a loathsome person he is.

Not that people shouldn't have known after the Supreme Court Justice deferral.

I feel terrible that was from a man arguably even worse than Mitch and completely unfounded.

But yes, I use it anyway.

I'm sure it's fun to be all like "Ha ha, keep the shutdown going to screw over the Cheeto man." but at the same time, both sides have gotten very childish as of late. Not very new, I realize, but it's frustrating all the same.

I fail to see how both sides are keeping the shutdown going when one side has been almost daily voting to end it.

No, no, Silas, sure Dems have been trying to end the shutdown, but they've also been making snarky remarks at Trump and the GOP's expense. And that's just going too far.

Not to mention one side is being insanely hypocritical. Trump cancels Pelosi's military flight to see the troops in Afghanistan allegedly because of the shut down, but his own wife gets a government jet to go vacation down in Florida just a few days later.

It kind of implies that you think you know more about privilege and how it affects society than a black woman does.
Of course he knows more about privilege than she does, he's been using it all his life!
Wait, what does hot sauce have to do with race?
Honestly wondering the same thing here, as the enjoyment (or dislike) of spicy food has never seemed to have any racial component I noticed. Like for real, where did this come from, because I've never heard this before.

"White people can't handle spicy food like POCs" has become a popular meme over the last few years, in line with comments like "ha ha ha we POCs are more richly cultured than the crass white folks with their starched shirts and their SUVs". Anecdotally it's not really that true. European cuisine does tend to use fewer spices but a lot of us Southern Chinese can't handle spiciness either, as it's viewed as a crutch in cooking and not a big part of our diets. And I know both white people who have a low tolerance for spiciness and some who absolutely love it and can't get enough of it.

I found this to be a pretty good explanation for white people and our obsession with bland food:

White People's Bland Food Isn't Just An Internet Meme. It's A Centuries-Long Obsession.

I must be totally missing this, because "not spicy" is not at all the same as "bland." Also, I wonder if the people mocking white people for not liking spicy things have ever been to a chili cook-off, because the spiciest crap served there is almost always made by white Texans.

I don't like spicy food, because it gives me acid reflux. I do like savory dishes, so I don't get this. From years in the military, the people using hot sauce are pretty evenly distributed across any axis of skin color.

Two two-word rebuttals: English mustard (and other traditional sinus-clearers from across Eurasia) and horseradish sauce (or wasabi sauce, not picky).

Different kinds of heat, sure, but going right back to before Rome got big.

[up]x4 - *sigh* ok, so a few comments on the article:

and adoration of mayonnaise?
Ok, for starters, mayo is not flavorless.
The US has a long history of belief that a certain diet will not just change your physical self, but reflect or confer upon you moral purity. By and large, the architects of those belief systems were, and still are, white.
Ok, they have a point here, and some of the stuff about the change in food prep due to the Depression and WW 2 is obvious in a Fridge Logic kind of way.
