The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]From a lay view, I'd say if Trump sends a written copy to the House there's no real issue with him reading it out in the Senate.

The SOTU is political theatre. Replacing it with a written note is no big deal really.

To sensible people like you or I? Certainly, but Trump is not a sensible person and thus this is a wonderfully effective means of attack.

I'm sure that it caused him to be angry and likely humiliated.

Trump would have to write it.

So no.

I'm fully aware he'd be willing to do a video State of the Union, though.

Double points if it's from his The Apprentice office or a replica.

I’ll vote for whoever the Democratic candidate is but for some (Kamala Harris, Tulsi Gabbard) I’d have to hold my nose.

Gabbard apologizes for Assad and hates Muslims gays and transgenders.

Harris......I respect her pushing for healthcare gay and immigrant rights and challenging trump. However, as Lara Bazelon points out her criminal justice record is kinda shit.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2019/01/17/opinion/kamala-harris-criminal-justice.amp.html

Note there are other cases Bazelon never mentions (She defended the Orange County da after they got caught using an illegal snitch ring)

Speaking of Kevin Cooper got another round of testing approved (the defense also got dna from the other prime suspect). If it does clear him you can bet your ass her opponents are gonna use that against her

[up] Wait, he yelled that in the House of Congress itself?

It would seem that the GOP has finally embraced it's reactionary side without further ado. "Not meant as a racially-motivated remark" my ass - if that wasn't one, I'm Emperor of Earth.

Puerto Rican isn't a race, so saying that wasn't racist.

Though I could seriously see someone saying that to defend the guy.

This is so stereotypical to us in Latin America that it isn't funny. I pity whoever has to pick up the trash once this is over.

Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, we should find the absolutes that tie us.

"Rep. Jason Smith acknowledged he yelled “go back to Puerto Rico!” at Democrats during a tense situation on the floor Thursday afternoon, but the Missouri Republican insisted it was not meant as a racially motivated remark.

A Smith aide said the four-term lawmaker intended the comment as a shot at House Democrats over their 30-member jaunt to Puerto Rico last weekend — an event that got heavy coverage in the conservative media — rather than an attack on any minority lawmakers.

But in a week that saw the House overwhelmingly condemn Iowa GOP Rep. Steve King for racist remarks, partisan tensions remain very high, and Democrats initially believed it was a slur aimed at Rep. Tony Cardenas (D-Calif.).

"Congressman Smith’s comment was directed at all the Democrats who were vacationing down in Puerto Rico last weekend during the government shutdown, not towards any individual member," said Joey Brown, Smith's communications director."

Huh. Are democratic lawmakers taking trips overseas becoming some sort of conservative thing now?

In other news, Recession warnings pile up as shutdown wraps up fourth week: "...Across Wall Street, analysts are rushing out warnings that missed federal paychecks, dormant government contractors and shelved corporate stock offerings could push first-quarter growth close to or even below zero if the shutdown, which is wrapping up its fourth week, drags on much longer.

Their broader fear: The protracted impasse could convince consumers and businesses that the federal government will spend all of 2019 on the brink of crisis — whether on the border wall, trade with China or the debt limit. That could choke business investment and consumer spending, bringing an end to one of the longest economic expansions on record."

Well, that's something to worry about. Although a recession that the public blames on the Republicans is one of the few things that might pry Mc Connel away from his blanket support of Trump.

I don't necessarily assume that everyone who voted for Trump has to have endorsed the monumental level of incompetence, racism, and shitshow that it has become.

It was a stupid racist thing to do.

Just not necessarily this much.

[up]Don't really care, they voted for Trump they deserve it. They can be redeemed, but they should have been smart enough to know beforehand and as such I feel no shame in saying I feel no sympathy or empathy for those who demanded policies which left people starving, and then get their just deserts when it is turned around on them.

Claiming the moral high ground and wishing harm on other people because of their voting behaviour? No, that sounds like it fits right in with Trump's fans.

Pay more attention please Rainah, I said I feel no sympathy or empathy for their situation. Not that I wish death or complete starvation on them, just want them to not have savings so they have to deal with poverty for a while. Shouldn't have phrased the "goes around comes around way" So I'll apologize for that. But that is what I meant.

Other people lived with it so if they are so sure, "the welfare queens" deserve and forced people with their voting for them to go without money they should be able to handle it too.

[up]So? Voting effects peoples lives, and as we have seen has ended peoples lives. So they should at the very least, not be protected from knowing personally what their vote is subjecting other people too.

I'm not excited for their suffering, just don't have any sympathy for them. They made their bed, they must lay in it.

If they still support Trump and plan to vote for him again in 2020, I have zero sympathy.

My sympathy is mostly on the federal employees who voted against Trump and didn't want this to happen.

You know what, you guys were right. I shouldn't have wished that they didn't have any savings, just being in a vindictive mood. Still have no sympathy for Federal Employees who wanted this to happen to minorities and are complaining now. But...I shouldn't wish even having to be broke, (which is terrible in this country even if it isn't real poverty) on anyone.

I apologize. It is harder to calm down in this atmosphere sometimes, but I should be better able to.
