The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I feel like it should be an all purpose pinned answer:

"Trump or his lawyers or his former people have revealed something really incriminating about their obviously illegal activity and collusion. Is this the end or a gamechanger?"

The answer is no.

The answer is always no.

We knew about the collusion and Trump being a criminal a year ago, we know about it now.

We'll know about it a year from now.

I'm glad the number of likes is higher than the number of dislikes on that vid. Seems like most of the people who watched it agree with it.

When they mentioned Newt Gingrinch in that video about how he brought back racism and primed it for Trump, that reminded me of one of the most surreal experiences of my adult life when watching the documentary 13th on Netflix.

Newt Gingrich talking at length about the Republican parties racism, how it disgusts him, and how they use it constantly to prime the white American public to go after blacks under dubious criminal charges.

It was like Bizarro Lex Luthor had stepped into our world and into a documentary chiefly about talking about the persecution of Superman.

what is wrong with the Womens' March? Just how screwed up are the in-office politics that they can't bring themselves to cut ties with a blatant prominent anti-semite?
I don't remember who linked the Atlantic article, but it did give me some perspective on Farrakhan and the whole Nation of Islam. That said, I don't know why the Women's March leaders can't denounce Farrakhan himself and push the NoI to get rid of him and encourage their group to more more racially inclusive.
anyone up for talking about Kirsten Gillibrand announcing her presidential run?
I'm not enthused about her running the way I am about Warren. Anyone have her as their first choice for the primary?
If it came down to it I'd vote for her over Sanders in the primaries, that's for sure.
I think there's several people I'd vote for over Sanders, but it's not like he's the bottom of my list.
remember those Jewish LGBT+ people who were kicked out of a Pride Parade? They were kicked out very aggressively just because their rainbow flags had Stars of David on them
I don't recall that, but that's pretty shitty. I'm assuming that no one was kicked out of the parade for having a rainbow cross flag?
It has been increasingly clear over the past couple of years (or several depending on who you ask) that Republicans cannot be worked with. If you reach out to them for a handshake they'll cut it off with a chainsaw.
Unfortunately, the way our government is set up, there are some issues that simply require politicians of both sides to work together. And there are some occasional bipartisan legislations that will still get worked on, but as an overall trend, yes I agree. Especially with the turtle running the Senate.
Pelosi just told Trump to cancel the State of the Union address until the shut down is over, citing security concerns the government obviously can't pay for.
Trump? Give up a chance to be on camera? The only way that would happen is if Pelosi invited Putin to sit in the front row. tongue
If he does cave before the Dems, how do you think he's going to spin this?
The same way he always does, by gaslighting the public and repeating whatever bullshit he comes up with. Faux News will pick up the party line and obligingly feed it to the right-wing America and treat it as fact.

Given that Nation of Islam is a racist cult allied with Scientology, I don't think getting rid of Farrakhan will do much.

Well the NOI's particular brand of Islam takes a lot of liberties with the doctrine, in the same way that Mormonism does with orthodox Christianity.

I wouldn't call it an Islamic cult since that obviously makes it sound like it's somehow related to main Islamic religion,it does a good job masquerading as one however, the fact that's linked with another cult does not surprise me

The NOI has pretty much nothing to do with Islam. For one thing, it considers Muhammad to have been the Son of God rather than a prophet. Kind of a big deal.

And then there's the xenophobia, the antisemitism, the black supremacy...

No wonder Malcolm X ditched them once he visited Mecca and met actual Muslims. He then converted to Sunni Islam.

And then NOI members assassinated him.

Not for nothing does the SPLC designate the NOI as a hate group. Which might be why the SPLC cut their sponsorship of the Womens' March.

Louis Farrakhan btw isn't just a leader in NOI. He's the guy who brought it back to its extremist stances after the son of the founder of NOI tried to make it more like actual Islam. Malcolm X's family also thinks Louis was the one behind Malcolm's assassination, not helped by the fact that Louis at one point condoned it, justifying it by saying Malcolm X was a traitor to the NOI.

For extra "WTF" points, Louis Farrakhan is also a rampant misogynist. He has said things like "Your professional lives can't satisfy your soul like a good, loving man."

I don't know why the Women's March leaders can't denounce Farrakhan himself and push the No I to get rid of him and encourage their group to more more racially inclusive.

See above. The people who are with him now and joining up with the NOI are the people who want all of the xenophobia, antisemitism, and black supremacy. The NOI aren't going to get rid of him because he is giving them what they want. You might as well ask Trump supporters to turn on Trump.

Yeah, the unfortunate reason why The Woman's March leaders don't just denounce Farrakhan for his disgusting bigotry is because they are disgusting bigots, too. They claim not to be, but they are lying.

CNN is breaking that Rudy Giuliani, while still contending that Trump himself didn't collude with Russia, he can't be sure if others members of the campaign didn't.

Is there another reveal coming from Mueller soon, or did Giuliani just make his biggest mistake yet?

Joe Scarborough certainly seems to think so.

Repairing the damage from a recession is certainly something you can campaign on, but it isn't a "core platform position". I mean, what do you compare it with: the other candidates who are promising to keep the recession going?

Obama's signature campaign platform was in fact universal health insurance, and indeed is what will be his greatest legacy if we can get through the next two to six years.

It's also worth noting Farrakhan was a Trump supporter, in addition to being hideously misogynistic. A feminist organization opposed to Trump having leaders involved with him is kind of a big deal to that end. As others have said, the Nation of Islam bears very little resemblance to real Islam. The racial supremacy therein is firmly at odds with the real doctrines (in fact, Malcolm X's visit to Mecca and seeing the racially diverse pilgrims there was a major factor in his eventual breakaway from Elijah Muhammad and his group)

As for Gillibrand? She's my first choice. She's incredibly intelligent, excellent at politics and is one of the most impressive when it comes to her positions. She was the first to push for a federal jobs program, the reform of homeland security, she champions universal healthcare and more.

Apparently, "Where's Mitch?" is trending on Twitter thanks to a video of AOC, with plenty of responses implying that he's hiding from everyone (some say under Trump's desk) because he knows he "dun fuk'd up" or the like. Anyone know what's up with that?

Basically Mitch Mc Connel is currently one of the main reasons why the shut down continues. He is blocking every attempt to reopen it by ducking away from the democrats and their suggestions. So Cortez went on the "search" for him and filmed herself while doing so to draw attention to the fact.

You have to give it to her: she knows how to use social media for her advantage. That was a really clever move.
