Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I mean, Barr actually strikes as me an improvement over Sessions- let's not forget the fact that Sessions was considered to be too racist for the Nixon administration. The main reason people were worried about him leaving was the possibility that his successor would fire Mueller, so if that's off the table, there's no longer any reason to mourn his departure from the cabinet.
If anyone wants to introduce a topic, it is, in fact, possible to do that without talking down to people, ~Friendperson.
Also, hollers are preferred to disputing back in turn, thanks.

Re: Gilphon. Actually, Barr is a law and order guy and probably just as bad as Sessions in that regard. I figure that the discussion of his Mueller opinions are overshadowing this aspect.
Also, I am wondering about the thesis of this article
. To me it sounds like it's claiming that white Democratic presidential nominees would face pressure to take a position on race issues and that certain voters ("Obama-Trump voters") might be more put off by such candidates than by actual black candidates who don't face the same pressure. It sounds a bit paradoxical to me but as a seasoned biologist I know that 2+2=1 is often true; thoughts?
I agree this is very much NOT wonderful news, it is still something that is incredibly needed, and should honestly just be solved by ingnoring the leaders.... Pulling support entirely just sends the message that "You know what your problems aren't important to us either, we are going to let a couple people's shitty veiws ruin your chance to be heard... Because the optics of a few are more important then the problems of many."

Well, this is surprising: Several Republicans have voted with Democrats to not relax sanctions on Russian companies

Looks like not all Republicans are afraid to break from Trump on something
The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.When it comes to confronting the Russians directly, some Republicans have been more easy about voting with the Democrats.
Guess it ruffles the feathers of the old Cold War hawks.
Man, I can't believe "Russian agent" is something we say with utmost seriousness these days. I only ever heard it in reference to cheesy 60's movies.
In general, Republicans have been entirely willing to say that Russia is bad, Russia's interference in 2016 is bad, and Russia needs to be punished for it.
They just won't hold it against Trump. The party line is that he's an entirely innocent victim of circumstance, and neither colluded nor benefit in any way from Russian meddling.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub."Russia is bad, I hate Russia, and the NRA is not taking money from Russia or giving it to me."
And honestly, Vladimir Putin is more effective than most Cold Warriors by far.

I disagree- caving would do bad things for their own chance of re-election, but I feel like if Trump has to start dealing with the practical issues involved with building the wall, and people start seeing how badly that's would inevitably go... there's not a lot of reason to assume to would help Trump's chances.
Plus, y'know, most Americans don't want the Wall to happen, so even before we get into stuff like that, the default assumption should be it will hurt any politician who supports it; especially one like Trump, who has to rely on the entire country for re-election.
The only reason Trump thinks the Wall is important is because Fox News keeps talking about how much Trump's base wants it. Even through Trump's base is super-loyal enough that the presence or lack of wall is unlikely to change anything.

Re: Trump inviting House Dems.
Pelosi told Hoyer: “They can see what we've been dealing with. And they'll want to make a citizen’s arrest.”
Excuse me what? It wasn't "a couple of people" it was the leadership of the Women's March tolerating the antisemitism and LGB Tphobia of Farrakhan and doubling down again and again.
To continue to support that organization would be a grievous insult to Jewish people, LGBT people, and LGBT Jewish people.
It is absolutely a good thing, those who willingly associate with bigots should be punished. Supporting the organization while its leaders do such a thing would send a clear signal of priorities, Jewish women and LGBT women deserve better.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang

All in all, he's looking like a bit of a mixed bag.
I mean, there's no doubt he's going to be confirmed, but he may (big may) end up not inflicting much damage overall, especially if the Mueller report is already far enough along
