Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Mc Donald’s on a silver platter.
That’s a good metaphor if ever I’ve seen one.

There's some wonderful news, The DNC has withdrawn its sponsorship of the Women's March
.
I know this is kind of toeing the line on what is or isn't on-topic but considering it's the DNC I think bringing it up is still appropriate.
Personally, I view this as magnifient news. No-one who views themselves as even slightly progressive should be connected to bigotry and the leadership of the Women's March tolerance for antisemitism was shameful and disgusting.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangKinda agreeing with him that it's pretty pointless. Especially since the right enjoyed mocking Obama for his "fancy" burgers. This is a situation where the right used to make fun of Obama literally for being too fancy with his burgers, right? We're paying this incredibly minor gaffe way too much attention and honestly, it's not even that funny and comes across as a bit hypocritical.
It's one of the reasons I dislike Trump so much, these little things are distractions for the big shit he does.
Re: Mueller report: Trump's not getting impeached, but what I need is Ivanka to be implicated in something illegal. If there's anyone in this administration I'm afraid of, it's her.

It'd be hypocritical if we made fun of Trump for doing fancy burgers. We're making fun of the fact that he's serving cold fast food burgers on silver platters. Also, the fact that he's doing this is, as Tobias mentioned, likely due to the shutdown. So it's at least vaguely connected to relevant political matters.

Disgusted, but not surprisedImagine a Bob's Burgers episode where Bob is hired to cater at your White House.

It's hypocritical because we've criticized the right for criticizing Obama for his burger preferences. Honestly, we (meaning those opposing Trump in general) give Trump too much flak for his Mc Donald's... honestly, which makes us look a bit snobbish.
Honestly, we should be leaning into Mc Donald's. Pointing out the fact that, you know, it's pretty nice you can get a cheeseburger for a dollar. People like that. People probably won't like the fact that the only reason their prices can remain so low is solely predicated on undocumented workers.

It'd be one thing if it was personal consumption. That'd just be an amusing quirk.
This is food he's serving to guests. It's completely different.
That too. He's serving it in a garish fashion (on silver platters while still in the wrappers) and they're cold.

Disgusted, but not surprisedThe reason I at least pay attention to this (even if I don't think it's something that will cost us 2020) is because, like the time he made fun of a seven year old caller for believing in Santa, it's another example of the ways Trump is a failure of a President on every conceivable level.
Disgusted, but not surprisedWell, a shutdown is not a good thing, but there's no reason to back down, yet, if ever. If this does in fact go on a very long time, the Republicans will come under as much pressure as the Democrats, if not more, so the longer it takes, I think the better the final outcome will be.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.![]()
. And the thought process that goes into it. I need catering for a college football team that I invited to the White House, but what should I get them?
I know! Mc Donalds!
It’s the mindset of a 5 year old.

Not sure if this means anything, but:
Looks like Acting AG Matt Whitaker is going to testify in front of the House Committee the day after Michael Cohen's testimony
The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.

Based on the timing, I assume whoever would normally prepare food for something like this probably isn't considered essential staff and was furloughed in the shutdown. Trump's winging it on a Presidential meal, just grabbing up food at his own natural first resort: fast food joints.
A formal dinner sponsored by a quick trip to Miccy-D's is just what happens when there is no money to support the people whose job is to provide an air of professionalism in Trump's vicinity. We are seeing the juxtaposition of the Presidency and Trump laid bare.
