Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Without McConnell on board, or some Senate shenanigans that I don't know of, this bill is as dead as every other bill in the Senate right now. There's really only 2 ways this Shutdown will end apparently; either the Wall gets fully funded at $5.7 Billion (And I have a feeling by next week the price will be $6 Billion), or Trump caves and accepts any offer.
X3 Oh nothing is going to happen, Gardner isn’t going to seriously stand up to Trump and even if he was willing to he’s not the one that has to be negotiated with, it’s the Turtle who has control over if the senate votes to reopen the government.

I don't know. At the very least, it seems people are finally putting the blame where it belongs:

Lines up with how 538 has his approval ratings going down over the course of the shutdown.

Any "fancy" banquet Trump would throw would be marred by the simple fact that he has no class. He's a poor man's idea of what a rich man is.
He has no taste.
He has no sense of decor.
He apes the trappings of the rich elite in ways that actual rich elites would find utterly boorish and embarassing.
Believe it or not, if he had an entire fancy banquet where nothing but Mc Donald's and other fast food was served, that wouldn't be the worst possible menu Trump could devise.
Just look at some of the overpriced garbage fare served at Trump hotels and resorts.
The twist being that this overpriced cocktail has no hard liquor in it. Instead it's expensive Hungarian wine.
You can't call that a cocktail! A cocktail is a mixture of spirits (hard liquor) with other ingredients! This is $169 juice!

Disgusted, but not surprised
At first I was wondering why they didn’t even try to make it look like they cared at least a little bit, by choosing Panera or something (or really anything other than Mc Donald’s), than I realized...
That’s his favorite food!

Me: "Panera, really? I mean, is that the joke because I'm hoping that we all hope he'd actually get Washington D.C. catering....but Oooh. I get it now."
That was a Willow moment.
Mind you, Mickey Dees was good enough for Bill.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Off-topic serious question:
Does anyone else think that we are all putting rather a bit too much faith in Mueller and his report?
Suppose that report is jaw-dropping and just full of evidence of all kinds of crimes.
Aren't the odds more than a little likely that the Republicans in power will simply shrug their shoulders, say "So what?" and allow nothing to happen?

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.That's not really a prediction. That's why Mueller didn't turn in his report until the Democrats were in power and got an extension.
There's nothing the Republicans will allow to affect Trump up to an including murder.
Which is why Mueller probably will present the report in Trump's last few days in office and hope he'll be arrested after losing the election.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.See I was thinking that Mueller was slowing down before the election because it (especially since Comey) would be questionable to publish a report on a president's wrongdoing just before an election. Could be seen as trying to improperly influence the election.

I have the far more cynical that Mueller knows the Republicans would bury it and there would be no justice.
"Trump sold our country to the Russians and is guilty of high treason."
"Thank you for your work. Now toss your report in the bin on the way out."

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I, too, have wondered if we're hoping for some pie-in-the-sky resolution to the Mueller probe. One that will discredit Trump and the GOP so thoroughly that their stranglehold on politics will be weakened for a very long time.
We also have to consider that the FBI is not our friend by and large. Remember how they're going after "black identity extremists"? Clearly the most pressing threat in North America today.
Do not obey in advance.I've always been pretty "see where it goes" with the investigation. I'm not expecting some miracle tha will take down Trump and permanently ruin the GOP or anything, but if it does end up doing some actual damage to both, great.
And the investigation should be done, regardless of the actual outcome.
I highly doubt the Muller report is going to be the smoking gun many are hoping for. Based on everything we’ve seen so far I’m sure it’ll be damaging, but people are getting their hopes up way too much. What it should be useful for is dismantling Trump’s legacy once he’s out of office.
The less said about capital-R Resistance idiots on twitter making Muller themed children’s books the better.
At this point that seems highly unlikely, barring some massive new revelation.

They should have sent a poet.

So you have faith in Manchin to get the ball rolling and make something happen with Gardner and others?
Or wouldn't Trump just reject it anyway?
