Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

THAT is an excellent question.
From what I hear, Mc Connell isn't well-liked but he keeps winning regardless. Right?
The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.No Kentuckian will basically vote Democrat and serious contenders more or less don't exist.
Our State Secretary is kind of the weird exception who is a blue dot in a sea of red who everyone loves (and has repeatedly tried to institute sane leglislation Mitch ignores—and even his own party votes for).
Mitch controls who is on the ballot in the primaries and he usually runs unchallenged. He the definition of an old school party boss. The fact he's a Federal politician who controls the state legislature and machine tells you a lot about how things are with him.
Ironically, even his own allies seem to hate his agenda. They often vote against him and he just strikes it down.

"I hope this shutdown ends before my foodstamps go out. Why are the Democrats so obstinate?" -Heard about 8 times this week.
Ugh.
Edit:
Oh, Mitch is also leaving the Democrats for Kentucky so he doesn't have to listen to them bug him.

Manchin voted against the Obamacare repeal, heck he may have saved it.
That's not something a Republican would've done, there is everyone reason to dislike him but that is not the same thing as being a Republican.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangManchin is the opposite of a Republican in democrat wool, if anything I’d call him a democrat in Republican wool, he’s solidly right wing right up until it counts, then he falls in line and votes the democrat way.
There’s a reason that the Republicans didn’t trust him to be the deciding vote on Kavanaugh and instead had Murkowski abstain.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranYou remember the ACA thing a bit differently. The Republicans were deeply divided on the ACA issue because it was an issue that would crucify them.
20 Republicans voted against it.

Well, I doubt his wife has much to say about him.
Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, we should find the absolutes that tie us.

Very true, but can we take those feelings and turn them toward a positive outcome?
I'm really trying to remain hopeful, but I don't see a way out of this that isn't painful for just about everybody
