Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Charles I described the UK system for you earlier, the bulletpoint version is that there’s voluntary labour while in jail (that pays and let’s them learn skills) and forced labour as part of community service (called community payback).
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranA lot will depend on who else will be competing against him. If it's against Biden he has more chances than against (say) Warren, Harris or O'Rourke. That's going by that item written by Nate Silver before.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanOr even worse, he runs as an independent third-party candidate, splitting the vote and letting the GOP win again.
At this point, he's become a pain in the ass. Better to just let him run in the primaries, get whacked and make him stay quiet this time.
There's just no way to win, sometimes.
I hold the secrets of the machine.Sanders has explicitly said that third party voting is useless
and endorsed Hillary in 2016 and I don't see evidence this has changed. Seems more like excessive worry/bias to me.
Both the Sanders and Stein campaigns were heavily abetted by Russian troll farms, to the point where you couldn't tell which piece of propaganda was genuine.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Yeah, I don't like Sanders but I don't think he would engage in that kind of awful temper tantrum.
I'm much more worried about him running, splitting the vote, and then leading to Bloomberg getting elected.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangKeep in mind that Bloomberg could go third party, he threatened to do it in 2016 if Bernie got the nominee and might consider Warren or some others to be do extreme for his liking.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIsn't Bloomberg the guy that banned large sodas? I'd imagine he'd have a hard time getting anyone to vote for him.
Leviticus 19:34You know, since people are bringing up Russians again; how much did the Russian interference actually matter? The only quantitative estimate I've seen is by Nate
Silver
or linked
by
him, and it says that it was mostly
a negligible amount/proportion of Tweets and social media posts and almost certainly had no actual effect on the elections. And that it is probably overhyped by news media eager to distract from their own overhyping of Hillary's emails. Anyone got corroborating or contesting evidence?

Trump backs off national emergency with no end to shutdown in sight
Over the weekend, White House aides and advisers said they were still unsure how the president planned to end the government shutdown.

Maybe, but the fact that he threatened it was bad enough.
That's just inexcusable, Sanders for all his flaws never threatened any such thing.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThe Russian interference is pretty damning as they didn't have to move the meter much to change the election.
And Jill Stein wasn't Bernie.
She was outright a Third Party provocateur bought and paid for to disrupt the election. She should be in prison.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. No, I am not quite convinced that even within a close election such a small impact made a difference. Especially in the absence of numerical data. The NRA gets a lot of money, did it really make a lot from Russian connections.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI think the scale of what actually was done is sometimes underestimated. Also, some of the implications are not entirely proven but indicate the entire election could have been fixed.
For example, Trump was heavily in cash-debt when Russian billionaires bought pieces of his property at an enormously inflated price that allowed him to get out of that.
And Jill Stein's half million votes could have made a difference.
