Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The day Charles compliments Mitch Mc Connell is the day hell freezes over.
You know, the chunk Dante said wasn't already frozen.

Anyway, I believe Biden and Harris are set to make announcements in the coming week or two. Their decisions will certainly be important to analyzing other candidate's chances.

MLK Day, huh? Anyone else think that's a little...disrespectful or something? It feels like its missing the point a bit to use it for boosting a Presidential campaign.
Harris is black, so it’s different than if, say, Biden tried it.
That said, several
of the black women
I follow on Twitter are not fans of Harris.
This particular fact
keeps making the rounds.
Uhhhhh.....
What is Amy Klobuchar's record? As I hinted at when discussing Warren, as a 2018 overperformer in a swing state in the Rust Belt Klobuchar would be well positioned in a general election.

x5 ...Freaking YIKES. On the MLK Day thing, fair enough, but it still doesn't sit too well with me.
She's not all that popular among the other Trans people I follow on Twitter either. Evidently she tried to deny Trans prisoners HRT while in prison or something like that. Which is...Not Good.

The Faceless is an annoying enemy that hides in the shadows until you get too close, or eliminate everyone else. Much like our hated politician. Oh, and their pointing animation takes ages to get through.

ASAB: All Sponsors Are Bad.Criminals paying back society for their crimes is not something that's inherently a bad idea by doing labor for the public. It's just that it has become a for-profit industry that has a vested interest in forcing people to stay in prison as unpaid labor.
It's why private prisons should be made illegal and all labor only done for public works upkeep.
Then again, the US prison system is an onion of horrible shit that you need to fix thousands of things not just one or two or two hundred.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. For me:
1. They should support Medicare for All, our healthcare system is in dire need of reform and merely expanding the ACA is just a bandaid at this point. It's not worthless but if we allow the healthcare industry to continue to exist then they'll always agitate to come back, we need to remove them completely. It's viable policy and popular too, if not now then when?
2. Non-Isolationism, the world is inherently inter-connected so standing back and doing nothing out of some dogmatic rejection of interventionism is not only morally cowardly but also strategically foolish. America has the power to be a force of good and it should be.
3. Strong focus on Climate Change, it is a very serious threat to humanity as a whole and our nation's strategic interests. Therefore any candidate for President should treat it as a high priority issue.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji Yang@tclittle Prison labor isn't a loophole per se, as the 14th Amendment very deliberately points it out as something that is legal. Ergo, the concept is actually very much within the spirit of the 14th. Perhaps less so the idea of making laws to make an industry out of it, though even that not necessarily.

ASAB: All Sponsors Are Bad.No, forcing people to work for free is forced labor. Slavery is owning someone.
If you burn someone's house down and are forced to rebuild it, I draw a difference between that and being able to kill or rape you at will.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Lets see, what would I like...?
First and foremost: An ideal candidate should take an Intersectional approach to Civil Rights. Standing against bigotry of all forms is a must, and recognizing the connections and differences in each movement is vital.
On economics, things like Medicare for All are a good start. I'm personally up for something like the proposed Green New Deal, although I'd like more specifics before fully committing to that one. Essentially, more public programs and spending, and higher taxes on the wealthy would be a great start on funding them, if not necessarily the only way to do so.
On foreign policy, someone who is not isolationist, but less willing to start bombing people. Ending drone strikes on civilian targets is important, for instance. I don't necessarily oppose helping groups (like the Kurds) out of hand, though I'd really like us to scale back our involvement.
The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerI hope you mean that in a multilateral way, because one of the problems is that the USA is percieved as being unilateral in their interventions: it's either their way or no way at all.
Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, we should find the absolutes that tie us.

Sanders being president would likely kill him. If you take it seriously, its one of the most stressful jobs on earth. Just look at what 8 years in the job did to Obama, and Sanders is obviously conscientious enough to work himself into a grave in that position. So, pretty important question for a Sanders candidacy is "And which VP?"
