The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

... Could Trump be confusing/conflating actual sharks with loan sharks?

Most types of sharks really aren’t that dangerous. Most species don’t usually get that big, and like to eat small and medium size fish, Crustaceans, and Cephalopods, and never intentionally go after humans. A couple of species, like the whale shark, are absolutely harmless, and only feed on plankton and tiny fish.

Still, I think "Mueller" is a fine name for a prey-focused, open ocean great white shark.

It'd be wasted on a bull shark. (They need lazier, more gluttonous names, the conniving, muddy-water pains. Like "Donald".)

Trump's whole worldview is based on movies and TV. I'd be willing to bet that he hates sharks solely because of of Jaws and every killer shark copy cat. No joke. On that note, Trump probably just hates animals in general. His family doesn't have any pets as far as I know, which frankly is weird for someone that wealthy and tacky. Not even some kind of status symbol dog.

Worse is that his view is based on only certain TV channels. Schumer mentioned earlier that Trump genuinely didn't know public servant unions are suing his administration for their pay despite it being on the evening news for the past few nights. Not like Hannity is going to bring it up.

It's probably because Trump has the brainpower of a fish, which means he's got a higher risk of being munched by a shark. The golden rule of surviving a shark attack is to not act like a fish.

[up][up][up] Trump having disdain for animals isn't too far off, given his sons are avid hunters and the fact he allowed bans on trophy imports to be dropped.

[up]Big game hunters at that. The Trump family is every shallow cartoon villain stereotype brought to life. People love complex villains, but the sad truth is most bad people in real life really are just goons.

[up] From research, Eric Trump owns a dog and Ivanka actually wants the Orange Menace to have one and his ex-wife Ivana actually owned a poodle while she was married to him, but apparently he was quite a dick about it to the point the dog hated him. Additionally, an adviser claimed Trump thought Mike Pence was low-class for bringing his pets with him to the VP residence and it should be kept in mind he has a regular habit of comparing people he hates to dogs. So yeah, it can be safely stated Trump has no empathy for animals of any kind and it's really embarrassing when Mike Pence has more empathy for animals than Trump does.

@staroutlaw

Complex villainy (or just complex people in general) requires them to be intelligent and at least self aware. Most criminals or just plain awful people usually lack such traits.

Trump doesn't drink alcohol. I mean, he's a cunt for stealing that line from me, since it's literally his only positive trait, and he literally made a joke about it being his only redeeming quality, but he's got one.

Drinking or not drinking alcohol is neutral, not a positive attribute. And could you not use the c-word? Yikes.

Actually no, for various reasons. True evil, ironically, requires a person to have virtues.

To paraphrase CS Lewis, the worst monsters aren't mere selfish people-they're great patriots, great priests, that sort of thing.

Okay, he's a cock. I'm not going to mince words, I hate him with every fiber of my being, but the other c-word would be more appropriate.

The, uh, the other c-word has some very sexist connotations, though. I believe that would be why you were asked to not use it.

I think those connotations have mostly gone away nowadays. I know I've heard it used in much more casual contexts interchangeably with the other c-word. Unless it's specifically meant as a sexist slur, I think it's become just another strong curse word.
