Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well, in other news, Republicans might finally realize their dream of cutting Medicaid:

This would affect me directly, so I think I at least have a right to panic over this
The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.So people can talk about who they find sexy, but they can't talk about non-typical things that turns them on?
Miss us with that prudish "police society" BS.

For the record I don't share that view point but I know plenty of people who do,it's just something I'm pointing out that in general the topic of fetishes is considered inappropriate

have a listen and have a link to my discord serverThere is a way for a budget to pass no matter what Trump does. Congress can override his veto, but that would require a substantial portion of Republicans to grow spines. It could happen if this goes on long enough, but if it does, then Trump might as well resign, because he has no more power.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Speaking of more local/state news, as Oruka suggested, in my home state, there's quite a few "interesting" bills being filed :
https://www.4029tv.com/article/bills-were-watching-in-arkansas-2019-general-assembly/25845496
Among them:
- Banning abortion of fetuses due to discovery of Down's syndrome - Reducing fees for a license to carry a concealed handgun - A bill that would change the definition of "neglect" to allow children to play or remain at home without direct parental supervision, under certain conditions

Well, the first one is blatantly awful, the second is dumb, and the third is... well, I don't have actual research to back this up, but my gut tells me that parental neglect laws tend to fall disproportionately on lower income households with a single working parent. Relaxing those laws might help if done properly. That said, I wouldn't be caught dead assuming that state GOP legislatures can ever do anything that doesn't have malice toward the poor, women, and minorities at the heart.
They haven't earned anything resembling the benefit of the doubt.

1)Forbidden topic,so can't really comment without starting something I wish I hadn't
2)Reducing fees to carry a doesn't seem like such a bad thing, though if they keep reduce the fee there'll be talk of scrapping it altogether
3) Those better be pretty damn exceptional circumstances,I expect this one will get shot down

and I believe that the law it's amending is here
. Apparently the concern is that the current reading of the law considers any kind of parents not monitoring their children as "neglect" which is a) crazy overbroad and b) apparently encourages obesity and sedentary lifestyle.
If guns are to be had at all, the underprivileged should have easier access to them, qua underprivileged. That is, if the proficiency and responsibility standards remain high but the license is made cheaper or free, that's better than the opposite.
What another said about CPS being tougher on minorities is similar.
Sounds fair to me.
In your state legislature, did anyone run unopposed?
As for the Democrats asking AOC to 'play ball' and condone their acquiescence to a lot of questionable things (there's nothing 'moderate' about setting the timeline for others' life and freedom, to paraphrase MLK) in the name of closing ranks, that's unacceptable. Country over party. If your feet are held to the fire, stop squirming and take responsibility for your choices.

No one ran un-opposed to my knowledge, but there were a few where the only choices were Republican or Libertarian, no Democrats. Those I left blank.
And Republicans won most of the big ones easily
Surprisingly though, Democrats won a few of the local elections, though mostly in my area, which being a college town is fairly liberal

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.

The much more likely thing, is massive protests and marches instead. (That’s actually not a bad idea, truth be told.)
