Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That and she's pretty outspoken about defying "establishment" Democratic Party members like Pelosi. She loves pandering to "anti-establishment" folk for political points.
Why else do you think she was the only one besides Ocasio-Cortez and Ro Khanna to vote against Paygo when even most other progressives decided it wasn't a hill to die on?

To be fair, PAYGO wasn't exactly popular among the Progressive bloc even for the ones that did vote for it, due to it essentially acting as a form of austerity.
It being better than CUTGO does not necessarily a great plan make.

But most of them were at least pragmatic enough to realize it wasn't worth a fight.
Ocasio-Cortez and Ro Khanna opposed it out of principle. Gabbard opposed it because she never lets an opportunity to look like an anti-establishment figure go.

Yeah, even a broken clock is right twice a day. And just because Gabbard is trash doesn't mean that she's wrong in this case, though I doubt her vote had anything to do with good policy and everything to do with ingratiating herself with anti-establishment factions.
Edit: Heh,

Oh, I wasn't trying to defend Gabbard. My opinion of her is about as negative as yours. I was more registering my discontent with PAYGO being the reason to dislike her. There are far better reasons to, like the one that started this conversation.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerWhen did I ever say I supported Paygo? I brought it up because it was (up until now) the most recent example of Gabbard being an opportunistic faux-progressive.
Personally I think Paygo was just something that was done to appease people who actually seem to care about "fiscal conservatism". Remember that a number of House seats were apparently won by candidates who pointed out the GOP's hypocrisy on this issue.

Disgusted, but not surprisedCertainly, I wasn't trying to suggest otherwise. Just adding on to your point.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI interpreted this as an example of her doing something you disapproved of and therefor as a mark against her. If I misinterpereted, that's on me. Apologies.
I don't think anyone here was comparing the two, though.

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerUntil (re: likely never) AOC reveals a record of religious and homophobic bigotry, links to violent extremists, and outright taking the side of fucking Assad and blaming his victims....she isn't even on the same dimensional plane that Gabbard is.
How the bluest state in the union continues to elect such a repugnant and reactionary individual is beyond me.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. You shouldn't be. Principles don't mix very well with the practical realities of politics, which is why the "new American left" that emerged in the wake of Donald Trump's victory is going to go down in flames. Contrary to the wishful thinking on the left, empirical evidence indicates
that the outcome of left wing populists coming to power is not significantly better than their right wing counterparts. Their ideals are considerably less abhorrent in my eyes, but the fact remains that they're more or less equally corrosive to democratic institutions.

Well, isn't this just rich...
Gabbard accuses Hirono, Democratic colleagues of religious bigotry.
