Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Mitch is like a Mister Negative version of Mike Pence in that he's the other side of the Republican Party's evil. He's the embodiment of the corporate libertarian fasco-capitalist state (I know that doesn't make any sense but it's the best I can describe him). Pence being the religious nutjob section.
If Mitch could legalize slavery for the pharmaceutical, tobacco, and energy companies then he would.
I repeat the above sentence.
Remember, he wanted to repeal the ACA completely for nothing. Repeat that sentence and allow its implications to sink in that Don thought that was vile.

x4 I do, especially because we're already getting Trumpeteers complaining about how this Shut down is hurting them and not 'the right people'.
x5 McConnell will not negotiate; to do so will make Trump look foolish, and doing that will anger the Republican base to revolting. So much so that McConnell might actually get primaried by a Trumpeteer. McConnell knows he has to appease Trump, at least publicly, to keep the power he's accumulated, and so he has to promise not to bring anything up that he knows Trump will simply Veto.

I wonder if this will be enough for the American public in red states to finally turn on Trump, maybe we could get a second New Deal if we won again, but given how many red-caps are blaming the Democrats for shutdown. It isn't possible but I do wonder if it would be beneficial to have an anti-hypocricy bill. Like if you vote for repubs to cut food stamps you shall have no social security for the length of that politicans term, if you vote for "muh religious freedom" then you should be able to be refused service for being a christian, If you vote against abortion then if you have ever had one you must pay out of pocket in full. Getting the right to confront their hypocrisy would ultimately be a good thing.
The issue with that is that the right definitely perceives hypocritical too-often for the same reasons the left views the right as hypocritical. This situation is what I tend to call "Campbell's Mirror". For example, the left criticizes the right for opposing abortion but being fine with the death penalty; while the right criticizes the left for allowing abortion but opposing the death penalty.
My general take on this is that hypocrisy is an overrated vice.
Leviticus 19:34I don't see people likely to turn on Trump over this.
He's trying to do what he promised to do.
A lot of the, "Is this where the public turns on Trump!?" suggestions depend on the idea of the public not wanting Trump to do exactly what Trump promised to do. In this case, he's trying for the Wall.

See this doesn't make sense to me,they're completely different things, the death penalty is about someone being killed by the state, they've already lived a life and it's being ended, where as with abortion it's something else entirely,it feels two unrelated which get paired together because they're talking points.

x3 Most Republicans will absolutely turn on Trump if he loses his fight for the wall. Not all of them, even H. W. still won plenty of States after his "No New Taxes" Promise broke, but enough that Democrats can win even better in 2020 because they'll just sit home and not vote. This is Trump's must-win, and he can't win this time (unless the Democrats blink but so far they have an iron resolve), so he (and the rest of the Republicans) will become a loser to his Voter base, especially in 2020.
And then that won't even add things like a possible (predicted) Recession, the end result of the Mueller investigation, and any other myriad of problems that can arise that this Administration is too incompetent to solve.

~Friendperson, if you're not trolling, you are doing a great impersonation of it in OTC. Contribute thoughtfully and genuinely, or don't at all.
@Ultimatum: Actually for what it's worth, with most Campbell's Mirror situations, it's usually because the two issues that are actually orthogonal to each other.
Leviticus 19:34Bye-bye?
Are we sure he isn’t just one very well disguised toddler?
Now that I think about it, I know exactly who he reminds me of.

Trump once again warned that he might declare a national emergency in order to bypass Congress to build his border wall. "I have the absolute right to do national emergency if I want," Trump said when asked what he would do if he is unable to reach a deal with Democrats to fund the wall. (New York Times)

The Democratic response to last night's national address received slightly higher ratings than Trump's actual remarks. Trump's remarks scored a combined 28.1 in the preliminary numbers from Nielsen, while the Democratic response scored a 29.3 across the same networks. (The Hill)
2/ The Supreme Court refused to intervene in a mysterious case that is believed to involve Robert Mueller and an unidentified foreign-owned company. Mueller subpoenaed "Company A," as it is referred to in court documents, but the company insists it has immunity and that complying with a U.S. Grand Jury subpoena would violate the laws of its home country. The court offered no explanation as to why it declined to intervene in the case and many case details remain shrouded in secrecy. The company is believed to be a foreign financial institution. (Politico / Washington Post)
3/ A law firm that has represented both Russian interests and the Republican Party is involved in the mystery subpoena case between Robert Mueller and "Company A." The high-powered law firm Alston & Bird previous represented the Republican National Committee in an effort to obtain some of Hillary Clinton's emails. Alston & Bird also represented Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, who loaned Paul Manafort $10 million. It is unclear whether Alston & Bird is currently representing "Company A," the country that owns "Company A," or the regulators of that country. (CNBC / CNN)

4/ The leaders of seven committees in the House of Representatives called on Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin to explain why the U.S. decided to ease sanctions against companies linked to Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska. The committee chairs wrote to Mnuchin and called on him to explain a December announcement that the United States will lift sanctions against three companies connected to Deripaska, including an aluminum manufacturing giant called Rusal. The move still keeps Deripaska on a blacklist of sanctioned oligarchs with close ties to the Kremlin, but Democrats say the deal allows Deripaska to maintain "significant ownership" of one of the companies. Notables.
The Food & Drug Administration suspended routine inspections of the U.S. food supply because of the partial government shutdown. Most food safety inspections have been stopped, but the FDA is planning resume at least some of them if it can force furloughed workers to return to work without pay. "It’s not business as usual," said FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb, "and we are not doing all the things we would do under normal circumstances. There are important things we are not doing." (NBC News / Washington Post)
TSA officers have started quitting their jobs after being forced to work without pay during the shutdown. "Some of them have already quit and many are considering quitting the federal workforce because of this shutdown," said Hydrick Thomas, head of the American Federation of Government Employees' TSA Council. (Daily Beast)
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will step down and leave the Justice Department after Mueller finishes his investigation. Rosenstein originally planned to remain as the deputy AG for about two years, and will remain on the job until after a new attorney general is confirmed. Trump nominated William Barr, who is scheduled to begin his confirmation hearing on Jan. 15. There has been no indication that Rosenstein is being forced out by the Trump administration. Roughly $5 million from Trump's farm bailout program will go to a Brazilian-owned meatpacking company. JBS is one of the largest meatpacking companies in the word and has roughly 73,000 employees and 44 plants in the U.S., but JBS is owned by a company based in San Paulo, Brazil. Since Trumpy won't negotiate we will have to deal with a state of emergency over a non-issue. On one hand I hate this, on the other I'm glad they are finally going hard on him, we need someone who will stand up and not try to negotiate and hope they one day become reasonable like Obama did. I'd vote for someone like that for President.
I'm just so tired of having to deal with conservative shit. The conservatives in America right now have nothing to offer us at all, and people's lives have ended over this last election. Once we are in power again, don't bother negotiating.

in a little cynical and accelarioism thinking, this is kinda good for democrat because is the kind of pointless hill Trump will die with no gain, this will shirnk almost all of is suporter who werent crazy because it show what he is, it also show the republican cant or dont care enought about consequence because party loyalty is more important.
The situation is a win for the dem, ether it drag and trump lose more and more or the shutdown end and he lose.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"
No. Let's not give accelerationism any merit or thought.
The Democratic Party is not mainly opposing the wall to accelerate things. They are doing it because it's a waste of money that will permanently tarnish the reputation of the USA if it is built.
The USA can walk back from Trump once he leaves office. The USA cannot walk back from the wall if it is built. It would be a monument to xenophobia and bigotry. Senator Schumer said it best when he said that the symbol of America should be the Statue of Liberty and not a 30 foot wall.
Corrected.

Yeesh. Do you think this will hurt Trump at all, or is he really Teflon Don?'
