The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Sorry, I got a bit confused there. The awfulness of people like Nunes and Mc Connell tend to blend together a bit.

I will acknowledge Nunes is our fault and withdraw the challenge to a duel.

Granted, since his party is out of power he's reduced to sitting in a corner pouting.

Cocaine Mitch is pretty much the embodiment of the failure of democracy in the state as no one in the state will vote for a Democrat due to #Team Loyalty but he controls the Republican party in the state completely. So he's the candidate on the ballot with all the control.

People joke (or have conspiracy theories with no basis in reality) about Hillary sabotaging the process for Bernie but that's just how it is in Mitch.

Every State Republican owes their careers to Mitch even if they disagree with him or outright loathe him because of his position in the Federal government.

Trump Storms Out of White House Meeting with Democrats on Shutdown

"Trump walked out of shutdown meeting with Democratic lawmakers: Schumer" - http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-shutdown-democrats/trump-walked-out-of-shutdown-meeting-with-democratic-lawmakers-schumer-idUSKCN1P32FK

Still developing, here's what it has currently:

U.S. President Donald Trump walked out of a meeting with Democratic lawmakers after they told him they would not fund his proposed wall along the U.S. southern border, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said on Wednesday.

"He asked (House) Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi, 'Will you agree to my wall?' She said no. And he just got up and said, 'Then we have nothing to discuss,' and he just walked out. Again, we saw a temper tantrum because he couldn't get his way," Schumer told reporters outside the White House.

Also, in "BOTH SIDES!!" news: https://twitter.com/AP_Politics/status/1082857277084893184?s=19

AP FACT CHECK: Democrats put the blame for the shutdown on Trump. But it takes two to tango. Trump's demand for $5.7 billion for his border wall is one reason for the budget impasse. The Democrats refusal to approve the money is another. https://t.co/9IWnqUgl2d

[down] That's the general tone of a lot of replies to that tweet.

Does it count that Kevin McCarthy is also from California? Some people have called him Machiavellian and a keen enforcer of party discipline who rose to leadership and is now House minority leader to the point that I wonder if he's a less lucky version of Big Bad Mitch.

[up][up][up] To be fair, it does make sense if you're working from the perspective that categorical refusal of any negotiation with terrorists is inherently immoral... which is stupid if you actually analyze that logic, realize its flaws and accept them for what they are as well as the fact that the conclusion being promoted is unworkable/nonsensical. But that's evidently too inconvenient for the kind of people that decry the refusal of negotiation with terrorists, so they simply refuse to even humor the notion.

Negotiating with terrorists generally is a stupid idea because if someone is willing to take hostages and engage in extortion via attacks on civilian targets then they're not the kind of people who will hesitate to do it in the future.

However, there's also the fact "terrorist" can and has been applied somewhat liberally, especially with regards to nations. Take the Taliban for instance. Not negotiating with them is kind of an exercise in futility because the war will never end otherwise.

Remember how I mentioned the probability of something going majorly wrong during the shutdown?

The FDA is halting many domestic food inspections during the shutdown.

Though they're trying to find a way to continue inspecting 'high risk' factories, this is not particularly auspicious news.

Trump is rapidly losing ground. More Republicans are peeling off and saying the shutdown should end, more of the public blames Trump for it rather than the Democrats, etc.

I don't see this lasting more than a week or two, till the end of the month at most

Re: Republicans moving away from Trump and demanding an end to the shutdown, at the moment it's still the usual suspects who're calling for an end to this: Murkowski, Collins, and this time it's Gardner instead of Flake. Were McCain still alive I can bet he'd be the third voice. As it is, it's no different than usual, since they're the same Republicans playing "moderate" while still almost always voting with the party, anyway. Until we get enough Republican Senators vocally willing to overturn the veto, I'd trust these three far less than I can collectively throw them.

Also, an update on the 2019-2020 Democratic Hunger Games (sorry, primaries), Tom Steyer has ultimately decided not to run.

For anyone who doesn't know him, he's a billionaire who has been campaigning for Trump's impeachment for some time now. I'm afraid I don't know too much more about him.

I'm leaning towards the opposite, and would be a bit surprised if this was resolved before the end of the month. In no small part due to the fact that it would be Trump's largest failure, with him as the sole figure to blame.

Unlike the Obamacare repeal failure, which could be blamed on Congressional Republicans, if the government reopens without the wall funding, it will mean even Congressional Republicans decided to ignore him and move on.

[up] I'm betting Mid-February is when someone will blink; hopefully Trump and the Republicans in the Senate, but we can't count out the Democrats doing it. However, I am fully expecting this to become the longest Government shutdown this country will face (at least in the immediate future).

I've been increasingly feeling like the answer here is to start ignoring Trump entirely, and instead negotiate with McConnell- I feel like they can override Trump's veto if they get McConnell, and I'm also pretty certain that McConnell wants a functioning government more than he wants a wall.
