Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

She and Schumer spoke pretty much immediately after Trump.
From what I hear the presentation was fairly poor, still, I really like the "we don't govern by temper tantrum" phrase. Really drives home how farcical and unnecessary this shutdown is.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangSo, it appears that the Trump Administration isn't learning anything from this shutdown; instead of demanding less, they're actively demanding more. According to Vice President Mike Pence, not only is $5.7 billion for the Wall still a necessity, they now also need $563 million for 75 additional immigration judges, $211 million to hire 750 additional Border Patrol agents, $571 million for 2,000 additional law enforcement personnel, $4.2 billion for 52,000 detention beds, $800 million for Humanitarian needs, and $675 million for technology to detect weapons and drugs at the border
. Without these things, Trump will not agree to end the Shut Down.
The fact that the beds will cost almost as much as the freakin' wall is very odd to me; unless the Beds are of the highest quality, why would 50k beds cost as much as 250 Miles of Steel Beams?
It looks like we are going to be in this for the long haul; Trump is only demanding more from this shut down, not less. At least he hasn't declared a 'National Crises at the Border' yet...
I hope people understand that Trump fully intends to give the money to associates as well. The people gathering at the "Wall Zone" in anticipation of building are all Trump supporters and associates.
So, this is an issue of money not ideology and why he won't break.
Again - there needs to be another strategy than "wait until the Republicans fold."

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. They’re just vastly underestimating the cost of the wall.
Aparently the federal government has now failed to pay its water bill to DC meaning DC has the right to shut the water off to the federal buildings, including the White House.
Oh and I know it was a bit ago, but everyone did catch Trump defending the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan a few days ago, right?

Trump defending Russia's blatant Imperialism? Color me surprised...
Anyway, did I miss anything major? Checking back, there seems to be no declared National Emergency, but is there anything else people who didn't watch the broadcast need to know?
Edit: The full thing is online, I can check there. Sorry for the bother!

The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerThe moment the shutdown somehow inconveniences him in anyway, Trump will cave. Then he'll frame it as him being generous and fair while whining about how "selfish" the Democratic Party was.
Probably when he can't get his daily taco bowl or Big Mac.

Oh, something bad will happen long before that that will draw his attention. My vote is on airport closures due to short staff, or issues with tax implementation.

Rachel Maddow did a segment about that on her show. Apparently Russia is in the process of justifying the invasion of Afghanistan. This is the third time Trump has randomly said something that just happens to coincide with Russian talking points.

Kinda. Putin if I recall has been citing Soviet conflicts as a sort of Russian nationalism. So he's not praising the Soviets per say: he's celebrating Russian (technically Soviet, but the Soviets are still rightfully seen as a largely Russian nation) military adventurism and imperialism.

$5 billion wouldn't be nearly enough to build the wall.
Unless it's a really shitty one. Which would be in line with the rest of Trump's projects.
