Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. That's pretty much the final fate of anyone who shows up in the spotlight for the Republican party. These people are all independently wealthy members of the majority demographic. Unless Mueller meets them on their way out the door with a set of handcuffs, none of these guys are actually getting some kind of punishment by being fired or elected out or forced to resign or what have you.
People like John Kelly go home to their giant homes and beautiful families to cry themselves to sleep on top of their million-dollar money pile, and then move on with their lives. It's important not to fixate on whether or not they "got theirs", because what matters most is that they aren't on Capitol Hill anymore.
If you try to approach these people with the mindset of justice, you will be consistently disappointed. Justice doesn't exist when the perpetrators are rich white men. It never has, and that's been an open secret in America for centuries. We can change that, but only after we've pried legislative, executive, and judicial power from their grip.
The United States was made by rich white men for rich white men. We've been working hard to change that for over two hundred years. We still have work to do.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I think frankly that's an attitude that's incorrect and removes one of the chief benefits of the Trump administration. I'm no one to deny the fact the Republican Party is a Pyramid Scheme where you put in 40 years of work and retire to sincure jobs with corporations or investment firms.
However, the simple fact is that these people are getting all their dreams of power and influence smashed to pieces.
And we can take Schadenfreude in that.

Exactly, sure they'll still have money which isn't nothing but that doesn't outweigh the shattering of their reputations and ambitions.
Which is a simply delightful thing to think about.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangIn terms of wealth disparity, we are actually losing ground. If you look in Piketty's "Capital in the Twenty First Century", he documents the steady redistribution of wealth upwards since the 1970's. But it wouldn't be hard to reverse: it would just take higher taxes on the rich. And we are finally starting to make that case, with the rise of progressive candidates at the national level.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.![]()
It's all relative.
When you're that rich and powerful, losing any power and prestige is too much.
I'm reminded of this quote from The Hobbit concerning Smaug and the cup Bilbo stole:
- His rage passes description — the sort of rage that is only seen when rich folk that have more than they can enjoy suddenly lose something that they have long had but have never before used or wanted.
The Democratic Party has been rather busy, House leadership gives its blessing to D.C. statehood
A commendable position, the inhabitants of the District of Colombia have gone without representation for far too long, hopefully, when we can start implementing this we also give statehood to Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico made its official decision to pursue statehood awhile back. They were driven by the aftermath of the hurricane and the belief they would get more attention if they were.
You can imagine the GOP's reaction was....tepid.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the advice to media organizations, but Wiki Leaks singled out Britain's Guardian newspaper for publishing what it said was a false report about Assange. The Guardian did not immediately respond late on Sunday to a Reuters request for comment. [1]

x4 That's actually a good thing. For the environment, at any rate.
I doubt those workers who were employed in those plants will quite see it that way. And the ones who work in the mines that used to sell the fuel to them.
Is it just me, or do all of those sound like a Suspiciously Specific Denial?
EDIT: Wow, it's already on the page for that trope. Fast work, guys and girls.

I hold the secrets of the machine.@techpriest: It's the natural course of things as renewable energies become cheaper and more efficient. Hillary at least didn't make impossible promises on the subject of coal.
@De Marquis: Obama could not do anything about it when he had the power, just sounds like another impossible promise for a progressive to keep.
Life is unfair...Hillary was always going to be subject to the Appalachia Propaganda Machine because it's controlled by people only slightly less slimy than mitch. However, every other commercial was her "we're going to put a lot of coal miners out of business" gaffe.
Which OBVIOUSLY was part of a larger speech about newer energy.
But it contributed to the insane frenzy of anti-Hillary sentiment in the Tristate area.

The legalization of marijuana would actually probably result in the cartels losing the vast majority of their funding and do dramatic damage to their Narco-Terrorism that has killed hundreds of politicians of tens of thousands of innocents. The legalization of it in many states, in fact, severely hurt the cartels bottom lines and forced them to branch out but even then not to nearly the same extent.
Pot is the life blood of them rather than cocaine.
The issue is the majority of Satanic Panic folk tend to view Trump as a savior against it—and were of the mind Obama might be.
