Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

All Lives Matter is one of those things that is like Thoughts and Prayers.
I think its bullshit the Republicans are stealing a reasonable sentence to make it code for racism.
And Pelosi's statement includes directly addressing black grievances.

EDIT: And before someone accuses me of doomsaying, is it really that hard to believe? Once people begin losing their homes and starving because they lose their jobs and/or assistance, is not violence the next logical step?

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.You can take what I say with a grain of salt but Mitch isn't a Reasonable Authority Figure or the Only Sane Man. He is a dedicated Kill the Poor ideologue that I liken to the villain from Dishonored. The guy who actually thinks we should be working to the Objectivist Utopia by removing all the protections from the people Darwin would otherwise kill off for lack of affording food, clothing, or medicine.
If there's any Republican halt on Trump for humanitarian reasons, it has to bypass him.
It won't come from him.

There will be a very real human cost of an extended shutdown, but that doesn't make "we're all gonna die because of Mit Mc Turtle" any less doomsaying.
Rule of thumb, unless you're talking about imminent nuclear war "we're all going to die" is never appropriate or productive.

Agreed, I don't think she meant it in the normal way that "all lives matter" is used but it was careless on her part all the same and she should've just said yes.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangUgh.
On the one hand, I agree I don't like that she's using the "All Lives Matter" mantra 'cause that has so many unfortunate implications
On the other, can we deal with this sort of thing later, when there isn't a government shutdown to be dealt with and life and welfare at stake?

The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.Oh it's definitely worth criticizing. I'm probably the biggest social justice warrior there is
I'm just saying, let's focus on the problem at hand
EDIT: And by let's, I don't mean us here in the forum. I just mean people in general

The Wall is supposed to bolster border security *spits* mainly to keep nasty, Spanish-speaking Cental Americans out, no? So... Yeah.
Latin American (and those who still don't speak much Spanish, Portuguese or French, since they're still speaking Aztec- or Mayan-derived dialects/languages... or something else... like strong dialectical English) lives, apparently, don't matter.

Honestly, it's probably more secure than it was before Trump was elected. He was the first one to hitch his wagon to Donald aside from maybe Pence (who was really just doing it because his career was effectively over). He's been trying to be Dick Cheney to Trump's Bush ever since.
Except, Trump is not controllable like Dubya and we get the gross embarrassments like Mitch (and it was Mitch's plan primarily) trying to shut down the ACA only to have Trump torpedo it with McCain.
(A statement of Mitch's moral code can be summarized in that one sentence, "He wanted remove the ACA and put nothing up to replace it.")
A lot of Mitch's former rivals in power in the GOP have been fired, quit, resigned, or given up.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. It's more like that Mitch will let the House bills come up to a vote if vulnerable Republican senators such as Cory Gardner beg him. Evil Turtle needs his Senate majority, after all, so there is a balance to be kept between keeping Trumpist senators happy and non-red state senators safe.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanMitch Mc Connell basically acts like an even more detestable version of Manfred von Karma at this point.
Watch SymphogearI think that is a big
underestimate
...
Mitch being an evil genius I agree with but I think they're wrong regarding ACA being a Evil Plan.
I'm also going to say trying to protect Tobacco is a weird place to draw the line given it's Kentucky. That is probably the only place where he's actually representing his constituents—however his motives.
(He doesn't want marajuana legalized because he believes that would benefit small time producers more than large crop growers—he considered budging on it once but only if they could make sure only big farmers with state-granted licenses and X number of acres could do it)
