Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Republicans don't care if people live or die
The Dems may have no choice but to just give him his damn wall. We can't let him continue to hold the country hostage
Absolutely not, this feeble nonsense will clearly show Trump and the Republicans that holding the country hostage is something that works and that they should do again.
Situations like this are exactly why "we will not negotiate with terrorists" is such a good rule to have, if you give intrinsically hostile actors an inch they will invariably take a mile. Surrendering is simply not acceptable because choosing it will, in the long run, hurt far more people.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangWait till it backfires spectacularly on the GOP, that's what. They started it, they can own it.
Also make them have a taste of their own medicine for a change. Especially to make Cocaine Mitch look even more stupid than he is now.

I hold the secrets of the machine. We continue to offer the previously agreed on budget, all the harm is squarely on his head and the public can see that. Either Trump submits or he causes damage to both the nation and his chances of reelection.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangMhm. Notice that Trump as been President for two years, and has not been getting his Wall for exactly as long, despite the fact that there was more political inclination to let him have his way then- and to boot, that was in contexts where he'd get less of the blame for a shutdown.
There's zero reason to believe that this will result in a better outcome for Trump.
There's little risk of that happening while Trump proudly crows about how the shutdown is 100% his doing. Which is what makes this shutdown different from the others- Trump has cleverly side-stepped the usual squabbling about who people should blame for it.
Why though? They were always going to blame the Democrats, their opinion is irrelevant.
What matters is what the General Public as a whole thinks, and Trump has been nice enough to broadcast his responsibility.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangIncidentally, Trump Invites Congressional Leaders For Talks As Shutdown Continues
.
x5 Have you not been reading the twits tweets that have been plastered all over CNN/MSNBC/et al? (not that I could blame you) He's already screeching about how the shutdown is totally the Dems' fault because they're not bending over and giving him everything he wants plus a blow job (you're welcome). If they let "WHAT WILL THE TRUMP VOTERS THINK" stop them, nothing will get done.
EDIT: So much

Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.Well, call me a crank, but I am far more interested in what Evil Turtle, Evil Wannabe Turtle, Pelosi and Schumer do - as well as Trump when he's meeting one or several of them - than in what is posted in Trump's Twitter feed as these are the things that actually matter.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIs "For the People" the Democrats new tagline? Pelosi put it at the end of her response to Trump. That is so much better that "Better Deal" or whatever New Deal knock-off they were going with earlier.
Feels nice to have Lincoln on our side.
Incidentally, today is the 156th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.
"Congratulations, slaves in secessionist States, you're free to revolt behind enemy lines and risk your lives to help us set you free. Slaves in loyal slave States, you're gonna have to wait a bit... to become debt-shackled sharecroppers!"
John Laurens would have been so proud his tactics were taken up on a large scale. Never was there a more uplifting moment to slaves everywhere since Simon Bolivar's "you should be free and I'll get on that as soon as it's convenient" or Toussaint L'Ouverture's "you're free citizens, but you will stay on those plantations and grow our cash crop or else".
Why does Mitch McConnell get called "Evil Turtle"? I've seen a pic of him, and I don't really see what resemblance he bears to a turtle.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.... I guess he kinda does? It's a stretch IMO, though.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.

My bad. Does my point stand though?
Hopefully I'll feel confident to change my avatar off this scumbag soon. Apologies to any scumbags I insulted.
