Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Actress who has already been in the business as a child, mostly known for growing up in front of the eyes of the audience in "who's the boss" (or however the show was called in the US), tried a few smaller movies, then starred in the series Charmed. I guess she is currently busy with her family, because after Charmed she mostly turns up as a guest judge in various reality shows, most of the time pregnant.
So, reading the linked article...what I see is a black woman starting a movement, a reasonable famous actress using a hashtag with the same name to promote the same idea, and once said famous actress learned that said movement existed, she reached out and helped to amplify those voices as much as she could.
This is a little bit a chicken/egg thing...Alyssa Milano got the attention because she is famous, but there are way less famous actresses who are Black because of racism in the movie industry, so basically a white person had to speak up before there was any attention drawn to an important idea. This also makes my point, though, that a lot of white activists are more than ready to listen to activists of colour. It is not really Alyssa's Milano's fault that she got the attention which was beforehand denied, but naturally she can take advantage of a system which favours her at least in some regards.
Or do I miss something here?
Senator Warren is forming an exploratory committee, in an obvious move towards running for the 2020 nomination.

I am a little wary of Warren running for president. As noted here
, [1]
, here
and here
, she's a Senator who was up for reelection this year and in 2018 there were candidates who performed better than expected (Bernie Sanders foremost, but also Amy Klobuchar) and candidates who performed worse than expected and Warren wasn't just an underperformer, she was the worst performer. Now Massachusetts is a deep blue state and this made the difference in the end, but in Colorado, Nevada, Pennsylvania etc.?

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI do also worry if Warren will suffer from Clinton syndrome, in that she’s been a very obvious candidate for a while now and as such is already the ongoing target on a ton of Republican/Russian propaganda. The Republicans/Russians are already hard at work getting their narrative about her accepted by the public at large, that could do some serious damage.
I’m a fan of her ideas however, so there’s a part of me that hops she will push the platform leftward and maybe drop out around the middle, thus throwing the Russian/Republican propaganda machine off focus.

The whole point is that black women are constantly ignored in favor of white women. Their voices are always shut down, while white women are at least always heard. While Alyssa Milano might have acknowledged Burke and her having actually started it, the vast majority of other people-whether it's other women speaking out or the media-have not. These articles from The Root, an African-American news site, explain both Me Too and white feminism in greater detail:

"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."There was also some degree of hypocrisy among the #Me Too! movements white women when it came to Asia Argento being a sexual assaulter herself (especially since she was another founder of the movement) and that when it it came out, instead of acting immediately, a lot of the white women of the movement said not to be "too hasty" when it came to the allegations...
Watch SymphogearWell, the good thing is that for all the digging the Republicans did on Warren, the only thing they got so far was the whole native American heritage thing. If they had more, they would have already pulled it.
The bad thing is that Warren comes off as someone who had a lot of advantages is life. She will have a hard time convincing working class voters that she is not a "democrat shill".
Warren has way less negative coverage than Clinton did at this point in an election cycle. Moreover, even if she's declared early, she's still just one of many potential candidates, as opposed to the obvious party choice Clinton shaped up to be.
Right now I'm more amused by the fact that a year ago whenever Warren was floated as a potential candidate, the usual response was "She doesn't want to and she feels she's more useful in the Senate." Time sure flies.
Well, here's a bad way for someone to finish off the year:

You know, when the stuff about him sexually harassing women came out like a year ago, I wasn't surprised because a lot of his stand-up is about how he's a terrible person, so I just thought "Yeah, that sounds like something he'd do". This, though... I'm genuinely speechless.
