Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Normally I would agree with you but considering that the Women's march leadership has connections to hatemongers who are transphobic amongst other things (the Nation of Islam) I'm not really interested in giving them the benefit of the doubt.
Normally it would probably just be a poorly thought out mistake but considering the people in question, I fully believe that there's a good chance it was something uglier.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangSome of the organizers refused to denounce Loiuse Ferakhan because he helps fund their non profits. Its not that they themelves made anti semetic statements. One could argue that they should seek funds elsewhere, but thats hardly a reason to dismiss the entire march.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.Frankly...I kind of don't see the problem with the hats. Just change the shape a little bit to make it clearer that they are supposed to be cat shaped and nobody will be confused anymore. I really don't see how you can look at those things and think "white woman's vagina" and not "clever wordplay, direct reference to the Hollywood access tape and happens to be pink because pink is traditionally a girly colour". But if people jump to the conclusion, just make the reference a little bit clearer. You can even do them in different colours and add a pink bow to bring the point across clearer. Problem solved.

The Women's March has also been heavily criticized for shutting down the voices of women of color and trans women. This piece from Wear Your Voice, an intersectional feminist site, explains it: White Feminists, We Can Still See Your Cis White Supremacy Under Your Pink Pussy Hats.
Just a suggestion: How about the woman of colour are creating their own symbol to allow marchers to show solidarity with them?
Yes, and if there is an issue with the organisers, it should be addressed. But it is kind of unfair to accuse woman who decide to don the pussy hat as a symbol against Trump "you don't march for me". Because I bet most of them march for women in general. They might not have the specific problems of black woman in mind, but the right way to address this is NOT to attack them, it's to talk to them.

Or to recreate the Life of Brian scene that in turn is a reference to British Labour/general left politics at the time: We ARE Struggling Together.

I always thought that the vagina hats are embarrassing even before I heard the anti-trans accusations. Then I heard Ferkhan talk and I got enraged. What a fucking asshole. While apparently not everyone in charge of the Women's March has failed to denounce him, the March as a whole is tainted by association as a failed attempt to be woke.
Do not obey in advance.

My take, as shallow and uninformed as it is from my limited information, is that it feels a lot like "Nice idea, but the greater implications had not been thought through"
