Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Eesh, apparently Steve Mnuchin might also be shown the door based on whether or not the stock market keeps dropping
.
All I could think reading that was this
old Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal strip. The stock market doesn't work that way!
Nah. The Grinch had the capacity to develop compassion.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

Trump to seven year old that called in to talk to Santa: "Are you still a believer in Santa? Because at seven it's marginal, right?"

That it's small potatoes is not the issue here. The point is that we've got a POTUS who is so incompetent, so lacking in basic human decency and empathy, so fucking stupid that they messed up a call with a kid on Christmas.
It just highlights what a fucking sad joke this country became the moment Trump won.

Disgusted, but not surprised@stock market: Yes, the President has little to do with the stock market, and the stock market as little to do with the actual economy. But this can be used as a weapon against the Republicans, no?
Hopefully I'll feel confident to change my avatar off this scumbag soon. Apologies to any scumbags I insulted.@M84: Maybe, but I would argue that flipping out over every minor faux pas the president does is...well, a bit petty. That's part of why I got a little sick of the Republican party, actually-they would go really far out of their way to find every time the President Poked The Poodle.
@Megaeliz: Yeah, every time I stay at my Grandparent's house, my Grandpa plays Fox News all the time, much to my annoyance (at least at the time, they came across as very whiny).
But the weirdest thing is that my grandparents are the token Democrats of my family.

I find this particular petty cruelty vexing because it highlights that he's a jerk on just about every conceivable level.
It's a bit like how the petty cruelty of characters like The Joker or The Red Skull makes them even more horrifying. The Joker will do anything if he thinks it's funny, from pieing people in the face to tricking Superman into murdering his own wife and unborn child and nuking his home city in the process. The Red Skull never wastes an opportunity to be a bullying jerk, whether it's eating an apple right in front of a starving kid or committing genocide. Loki never misses a chance at engaging in mischief, whether it's holding a gasping fish out of water or killing a man and replacing him to have his way with the guy's wife.
Trump? He's a POTUS who makes fun of kids for believing in Santa and is dragging the country into the gutter over a stupid wall.
It's not a minor faux pas. It's not a gaffe. It's a sign of just how awful a human being Trump is.
