Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

At this point, can't agree even if Mattis was the Only Sane Man in the administration. The Trump White House is simply not somewhere you can expect to stay long.
It just occurred to me... Trump basically pulled a "You can't quit, I'm firing you!" on Mattis.
I'd call it something, but any comparison would invariably be an Insult to Rocks.
Well, he was an exec at Boeing, so does being part of the Military-Industrial Complex count as military experience?

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Trump's picking a fight with the Federal Reserve.
And of course the stock market's not doing well.
@HallowHawk
: What, pray tell, is your problem? Everything that I said in that post was perfectly reasonable and in fact is what a realist would be doing: Try to solve things peacefully, but be ready for war and bloodshed when needed because sadly, it will be needed to deal with warmongers and other enemies of peace who will emerge sooner or later, somewhere or the other.
Just in case it wasn't clear, I do not take unjustified threats well. At all. So please cease such actions immediately.
@DingoWalley1
: ... You do realize that Charles was basically saying "I'm a pacifist but I still oppose withdrawal of our forces so abruptly because even I recognize that doing so will lead to far more bad than good"? Because it seemed to me that you think he's saying something else entirely.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.
Reading tropes such as You Know What You Did
So if I understand right the idea of Trump supporters threatening civil war in the event of impeechment is being unreasonable. That's sort of the expert opinion, it would never happen?
Hold my beer and watch this.

Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursTrump can say whatever the hell he wants but his core supporters are small in number and have no ability to wage or sustain even a respectable insurgency, let alone a civil war.
No portion of the military hierarchy has any loyalty to Trump and without that any prospective coup or war is completely dead on arrival.
You need to seriously quit it with this crap. It's getting kind of irritating.
Also there's rules against just posting videos with no real explanation of their contents instead of making an argument or an actual post.

Oh really when? Can we not do the Civil War discussion again? It's been around often enough and it's usually just goes like this:
A:"Trumpists will start a civil war!"
B,C,D:"Hah this will never work because of X"
and repeat for a page or so <.<
It has about as much discussion worth as a Prawn Cracker has nutritional value.

Considering how many of them today are actually just middle class white suburban folks? Yeah probably.
They have no organization, no weaponry, no intelligence gathering, no discrepancy or subterfuge or training.
I don't think people realize that the kind of efforts and materiel needed to sustain even a modest insurgency movement are pretty huge and the amount of inertia and planning required are things they needed to start doing years ago.
And that's just a terrorist cell, anything resembling a civil war is going to require significant pluralities of the standing military and a great number of the officer makeup as well to wage any sort of actual movement or coup.
Basically if they wanted to have a civil war or an insurgency before Trump's out of office they missed the window to start planning a coup years ago. Anything that anyone tries can be dealt with by local police.
And that's not even getting into the weaponry situation.

Promise not one more word on revolt but can we at least agree that US politics today makes Home Land look like a documentary in comparison? Please?
Currently reading up My Rule Fu Is Stronger than YoursHomeland has the United States as the stupidly trusting and needlessly liberal nation surrounded by hundreds of evil Muslim countries out to destroy us. So....no. I don't think so.
Carrie must save us from the fact we stupidly won't bomb weddings.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Homeland is a dumb, racist show that jumped the shark in Season 3 (2013, when it literally depicted the entire nation of Iran as evil and supporting bombings against America) and has been artificially kept alive faaaaar past its original premise of POW-turns-terrorist. The fact that its trope page has hardly been updated in the last 5 years says a lot about how much steam it has lost.
It has zero relevance to any real world politics other than any coincidental Harsher in Hindsight moments.

Good on the state of New York.

I can't really bring myself to put Another One Bites the Dust in this thread again (WRT the Mattis firing). The current situation in this Administration looks more like Yakety Sax.
