The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Not sure how you get that conclusion from "the Senate’s traditional 60-vote threshold for quashing a filibuster “has prevented our country for decades from sliding toward liberalism.”"

As well as Orrin Hatch and the other Republican Senators who have openly said that if McConnell tries tanking the filibuster just to get the wall funded, they'll vote against it. Most of them are leaving, ironically enough.

Update: According to Bob Corker (also one of the aforementioned), Schumer and McConnell may have come to a deal, though what that is has yet to be discussed publicly.

I wouldn't give them too much credit. They know damn well Mc Connel will never do it. This is basically a freebie. If there was any credible possibility of it actually happening, I'm not sure they'd be so principled.

That's self-preservation, not principal, those Republicans understand that if they remove the filibuster then when the Democrats take the Senate they'll be able to pass what they want.

As hard as it to believe, there are still people who would line up with the Moderate to Center-Right, socially liberal Rockefeller Republicans out there.

The problem is that they all got kicked out of congress (and by extension, the party).

No deal is worth the paper it is written on until the Orange One has been looked at it, accepted it, listened to what Fox and/or Rush has to say on it, and then get the freedom caucus to get something through the House whilst they still have control.

Do you think therefore that this could drag on till the next session of Congress begins as the first act of a Democrat House majority? Because once they are seated it just becomes a case of overriding a Presidential veto, and given how cheesed off Republicans seem to be in the Senate what with the shutdown and Mattis, it's not an impossible proposition.

Honestly, the mere idea of having two government shutdowns in one year is a really good sign of how fucked up things are.

Hell, at least the one in 2013 happened because republicans didn't want to pass Obamacare, or something to that extent. I don't remember all of the details behind it, although Ted Cruz did have quite a lot to do with it, or so I've heard.

Yeah; there's plenty in this thread. But you're right; right now, though, the only one in Congress is Murkowski and she falls in line too often for some damn fool reason, despite Alaska as a whole wanting nothing to do with the post-2010 right wing.

Ben Sasse and Mitt Romney come to mind. On the punditry side, there's Tom Nichols, Bill Kristol, Rick Wilson, Sohrab Ahmari, Jonah Goldberg, Noah Rothman, and Charlie Sykes. All that's just off the top of my head.

Has anyone heard about this?

Russian Agents Sought Secret US Treasury Records On Clinton Backers During 2016 Campaign.

I know it's Buzzfeed, but they're the ones who brought us the Steele dossier (and recently won the defamation suit brought against them for doing so), and this article is clearly detailed and well-researched. And there's also clearly something dysfunctional going on within these departments, let alone with the Russian agents getting involved. It also has repercussions beyond Clinton's campaign since it reveals compromised intelligence agents and more of how extensive and how far back Russian interference (and Republican dereliction of duty) has gone.

One more thing the Democratic House needs to investigate.
