Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Democrats did scrap the filibuster for judges and executive members but not SCOTUS since that is a much bigger deal. Evil Turtle scrapped it there as well for Gorsuch since Supreme Court nominatios are rare, whereas he keeps it for laws as he's smart and experienced and long-game player enough to realize he'll need it in the future.

"Yup. That tasted purple."Fox & Friends continues to pleasantly surprise me by going against the president again.
It's not enough to make me want to tune into their show, but still, I'm actually stunned.

And CNN just broke that Ginsberg had a pair of cancerous nodules removed from one of her lungs.

God fucking damn it. I know its pure hindsight, but she (along with Bayer) should have resigned in 2012-14. If she dies/resigns while the GOP still has the White House and the Senate...

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.A liberal Supreme Court judge.
The article notes There is no evidence of any remaining disease, says a court spokesperson, nor is there evidence of disease elsewhere in the body. and I am mightily surprised by In 1999, Ginsburg underwent surgery for colorectal cancer, and 10 years later she was treated for early stages of pancreatic cancer.
For what it's worth She has also hired law clerks for the next two two court terms. so she'll be sticking around for a while.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanDemocrat-appoint judge on the Supreme Court. 85 years old. If she stops serving, Republicans get another SC seat. The SC is more or less a lost cause even if she stays healthy until a Democratic president.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.Ginsburg is one of the most badass and durable people alive. She's had cancer like three or four times now, and fought it off every time. She's broken bones repeatedly. All throughout that, she either works directly from the hospital or goes back to work literally the day she's able.
I wouldn't worry about her, she has stated that she fully intends to serve as a Justice until her dying day, and it's been shown that even the Grim Reaper can't do shit to stop her.
Honestly, at this point, I'm just assuming that Ginsburg is actually a Liberal Terminator sent back in time to stop the Republicans from destroying the planet. It's the only logical explanation for how durable she is.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangGoing back to Mattis, I'm mulling over putting his resignation letter on the Stealth Insult page, because he goes on at length about how much he, personally, views the alliances the US has made as invaluable before the fourth (or fifth) paragraph in which he says that Trump deserves a Defense Secretary whose views align with his.
And in brighter news, despite Trump pushing for it, McConnell won't employ the Nuclear Option
to get the wall funding through. Granted, this counts as Pragmatic Villainy, but it's still something.
Edit: After reading further, it might be less that McConnell is against it than it is other Republicans who've stated that, if the option were employed, would vote against it on principle, including Orrin Hatch.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"I recommend you don't, on the grounds of the Rule Of Cautious Editing Judgment

Nah, Turtle was Filibuster with SCOTUS, to punch Gorsuch through.
