Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The thing with most Holocaust deniers is that it comes off as "It didn't happen, but wouldn't it be great if it did?"
I visited the Auschwitz-II/Birkenau complex when on a tour in Europe. Maybe it's just me, but the camp still has that oppressive atmosphere of fear and hatred around it. Creeped the fuck out of me - I think that was the whole point. Didn't really speak much for a while after visiting it.
And it really takes a piece of work to look at that and go "Yeah, I'm okay with this" or worse "This is all fake" with a straight face.
And evil always starts with small steps. Very, very small steps.

I hold the secrets of the machine.Yup, it's going to be wonderful to see all the "Trump causes government shutdown over border wall" headlines.
So in news already-covered and not:
- Trump has said he won't sign the bill
- we'll only see how much he sticks to that when it gets to his desk, and whether Republicans in Congress will revolt and override the veto just to keep the government functional. Just suggesting it as a possibility, not a probability.
- As a result of that and the Fed interest rate hike, the Stock Market has dipped worryingly low
, with NASDAQ entering a bear market as a result.
- And in lighter news, Trump is no longer following Ann Coulter on Twitter
because she'd said that his was a "joke presidency" that wouldn't leave a legacy.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"If Trump decides against signing the temporary spending measures, hope he not only likes the Trump Shutdown, but also a Trump Recession, because Democrats did not run on giving Trump what he wants, especially his stupid wall, and a Shut Down will pretty much actively kill our Economy (as it is starting to run downwards).
I stare at the 6 million dollars there and wonder what cause would have benefited most for it.
But I do note that people are constructing the Wall NOW.
A butterfly sanctuary was bulldozed by Trump construction workers who said the property was forfeit for it.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Trump has openly stated that he'll take credit for shutting down the government during talks with Pelosi and Schumer. I really want them to let him.
Trump wants this to become a game of chicken. He's confident that Democrats will cave in and give him his Wall funding, on the grounds that we care more about the country's wellbeing than he does. We must not let him be right, or he will do this again.
When you give a bully what he wants, you can expect to see him again tomorrow.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Actually in the case of the butterfly sanctuary it's only been surveyors illegally(?) entering the property to do measurements and set down survey markers. No actual bulldozing yet.
And honestly, that GoFundMe seems like it could be another scam, like those scams that trick flat-Earthers into funding a rocket to prove the Earth is flat or whatever.

I couldn't agree more
To pay for the wall would be a travesty and a horrible mistake, thankfully Democrats voting for the wall will have the same fate as Republicans voting for Obamacare (without the knowledge that you're doing the right thing) and they probably know it.
So hopefully the Democratic Party will stand strong and the Republicans will suffer for their degeneracy.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangHonestly, this is kinda the last chance for the Wall funding, given that if this passes the next Budget issue is in February...ie when the Dems hold the House.
So I doubt the Dem's see any reason to go beyond the amount they already agreed on it.
Edit:
Jim Mattis is gone, it seems (Trump Tweet)
....equipment. General Mattis was a great help to me in getting allies and other countries to pay their share of military obligations. A new Secretary of Defense will be named shortly. I greatly thank Jim for his service!

"You can reply to this Message!"

Oh, it's definitely a scam. Too bad the authorities will charge the person in charge of that with fraud most likely.
New Survey coming this weekend!
